Hi, the white poppy is California Alba, sorry I didn't realize I had mispelled it on my trade list. It over winters in some of zone 7 and others as an annual. Long ago Native Americans in California used this poppy for tooth aches and headache pain. It doesn't have the strong alkaloids of opiate poppy but was also used as a food source (root and leaves). The lavender poppy is a bread poppy with a gorgeous laender bloom. Take care, Happyseed

I can't remember what the poppies looked like in the movie. It's very unlikely that the movie company grew a whole field of p. somniferum. They probably used corn poppies, since the poppies in the movie weren't very tall. You can get oriental poppies with that nice dark orange or red color.

I'm not sure what type of poppy it is other than the fact that it's supposed to be perennial, but I'll try the advice of cutting back and see what happens. I just examined again and didn't see any evidence of infestation, although I'm oddly lacking aphids on my pepper plants so it's possible something strange is happening. I do have a horrific hobo problem and sprayed about a month ago, so I may have thrown the bugs all off balance attempting to keep the nasty poisonous spiders out of the house :( Thank you for the replies! Yours is a delicate Shirley Poppy. Small, fragile, tiny yellowish green leaves. This is an Opium Poppy, aka 'Breadseed poppy'. A giant poppy among poppies, growing 4-5 feet tall (in my yard) with huge, blueish leaves, 5 inch blooms, and it is the definitive 'opium poppy', the one that dope is made from.
