Ethics vs aesthetics
Comments (46)I agree that the red roof is very wrong with those panels. My roof is a faux wood look but I plan to change it to a black or dark grey before I did solar. I so want to wait until the pretty solar comes down in price but I have been waiting for that for over ten years when we first inquired about solar. At that time we were told our roof was not a good fit due to angle to the sun, available attachment area and pitch. Now with a south face addition roof and improved technology it can be done at a cost benefit to us. I think that one issue is that by design my house's roof line is meant to be seen. The gables are an architectural feature rather than just protection. This is why regular panels seem wrong aesthetically to me. But the tile technology at this time is not a budget friendly option... I proposely have a smaller house too gscience...See MoreSticky situation and ethical question regarding custom build.
Comments (104)@taconichills.... I have not been shy about speaking up. I fully relate and have dealt with problems which necessitated jackhammering concrete, redoing tile, ripping up crooked sub-flooring etc. My list could go on. And I certainly don’t think it’s wrong to insist on the proper installation of things and a quality build. I’m just tired. For the record, some of the subs may be sloppy, unskilled and not exactly sticklers for quality, but most of them have worked extremely hard and some have worked well into the night in almost complete darkness. Laziness has, for the most part not been one of the problems I’ve dealt with. Lackadaisical attitude towards quality - yes. Laziness - no. I’m not a drinker, but I might just start :)...See MoreGardening Ethics - Disease Prone Plants - e.g. Gasteria bicolor w/BS
Comments (12)@MYAL plantLOVER Thank you. I think you are right effort should be focused on supporting plants with better vigour. @Embothrium it is the same bs that infects roses, but as you know some roses will get bs under ideal conditions. They just lack the immunity to fight it. I believe this Gasteria is no different. @cactusmcharris, interior BC Z4/5 It is NEVER over watered. It is never crowded. It always has extra air circulation. I have done lots of research on growing Gasteria and I have have many Gasteria. Below is the only conditions that can be improved, but even when he was under these ideal conditions he got bs. The only condition that could possibly be improved, which is hard this time of the year is the lighting. The sun hasn't broken through the clouds in days, but prior to that we have two weeks of sun. He's now in a south-west window. My two better windows have Gasteria I do not want to infect. I would love to try him under my nice new grow lights, but they have too many Gasteria and many Aloe that might get infected. I wont turf him yet, but he may go outside (out of the rain) year round. Unless we get colder than normal conditions I can protect him outside. I just can not protect him from the humidity. Not outside. More than likely, I will keep him inside. I will not do the preventative spray, except for maybe Rapsody. Rapsody (Serenade) is a bacillus subtilis bacteria that feeds on fungus and does a good job on roses. But, not the best on treating bs, best when used as a preventative....See MoreHelp with an ethical question
Comments (46)Hey Nekotish sorry to have implied that your father might be a narcissist. It's just very difficult for a person that is somewhere on the narcissist scale to cope with aging, I think more difficult than maybe for others but it's still difficult no matter what . . . also people who are very socially and physically active have a hard time because the interaction and activity keeps their demons at bay . . . they may have always been there but the slowing down of life in old age sometimes causes problems to emerge that had previously been able to be kept under the rug, particularly trauma related ones . . . Not sure what one can do in many situations. I recently read a story about a professional basketball player who suffered from depression and anxiety, and famously had an anxiety attack in the middle of a game that took him out. He said that he was lucky because one of the medical team in the locker room kept asking him, "What do you need now?" Luckily for that guy he was able to feel valued enough to respond. My dad's default sadly is to fight with and reject anyone who is trying to help him, he takes no comfort in it. Which is why he was never able to get a handle on his depression and anxiety at a younger age . . . I contrast that with my 94 year old uncle who enjoys being doted on, at least to some extent, he's a social animal without extreme need to control . . . No matter how you look at it, old age is not for sissies, as my mother used to say. As you noted, a lot of us are struggling with these issues. I think our society needs to do a lot better at coming up with ways to support our elders. I read an interesting article about this just the other day that I will link to. At any rate, hope you got some of what you needed, and don't hesitate to vent here again, you have a lot of folks who can relate. BIG HUG! No Country for Old Age...See MoreRelated Professionals
