Linen storage - Built in or stand alone?

last month

Hi everyone,

I'm planning a renovation of my bathroom, and I'd love some input from on what would work better and look better for linen storage.

We currently have 2 linen closets that we are (tentatively) planning to take out in order to make the bathroom bigger. (The existing closets are in the bottom left of the picture - removing one will give us about 41 extra inches for the vanity and the other is the left half of the shower.)

To make up for that lost storage, I'm planning:

(1) A central tower in the vanity, like the picture below

(2) Separate linen storage in between the bathtub and the shower (where the question mark is on the floor plan below). There is a large window on that wall, so I would place the linen storage past the window. I do not want a full cabinet because I don't want to block the light coming into the shower. So, I was initially planning a piece of furniture that has a cabinet on the bottom and open shelving on the top, like this:

Then I started wondering if I'd be better off with a built in cabinet. The space is 33 inches wide. The half wall around the shower will probably be 42 inches tall. If I built in a cabinet that is 30-32 inches wide and 42 inches tall, that seems like it would provide a lot of storage. I'm picturing the top as stone countertop. But I can't find any examples of that type of cabinet, which makes me wonder if it's a bad idea for some reason.

Is there a downside to a cabinet like I'm describing? Below is my attempt to draw it - it's very imperfect, but hopefully it gives you an idea what I'm thinking.

Thank you for any thoughts!
