Need advice re range hood motor and venting please
Comments (2)If you want to go up the interior wall, I suggest that you build the wall with 2 x 6s to provide 5.5 inches of internal gap. Then a 4 or 5 inch by 12 or 14 inch duct will fit. This will cost two inches of room on one side or the other. Eight inch circular duct has an area of about 50 square inches. 4 x 14 is a bit more (56), but square duct has more frictional pressure loss than round duct. If I were doing it, I would use fire-code sheet rock on those walls, and insulate the duct with mineral wool. This would minimize possible rattles from the blower, which I would put on the roof if possible, and provide some slight additional protection in case of a grease fire. Use only galvanized steel duct (stainless steel would also be OK :). kas...See MoreUrgent! Wolf pro wall hood advice for 36' Wolf 6 burner AG range!
Comments (9)First, a warning -- I have never lived in a house that needed make-up air. Not even close. Double-pane glass makes little sense for us since all the heat goes around the sashes in our Victorian. My experience with MUA is related to commercial systems. What follows is an opinion about the kinds of things that would make me consider MUA. Unless you have a Code requirement for make-up air, you have a fireplace you use when cooking (I seem to remember that you are South Bay?), have a "naturally" vented gas appliance in "connected space" (no always-closed doors between the hood and the appliance), or have a "tight" house (recent, energy-efficient construction, most likely), I would skip MUA. Even if you do need MUA, the difference in the maximum hood flow probably wouldn't significantly influence the the cost of the MUA system, which I would think was primarily labor driven. If not significantly more expensive, and you can run at least an 8" duct (preferably a 10"), I'd go with 900 CFM for two reasons: * You have it when you need it -- guests over, and the kitchen fills with smoke... * A 900 CFM blower at 600 CFM may be noticeably quieter than a 600 CFM blower at 600 CFM The 24" will serve you well. Comments (6)Please note that you should ideally have a 36" hood over a 30" range, in particular if you have a gas range. Around here, most of the contractors already know that and this seems the standard configuration in new construction. In other parts of the country, contractors frequently don't inform themselves as much about what it takes to make a kitchen really functional vs. just making it look pretty. So, it is often on the home owner to point out these technical details. As you mentioned that you want a hood with a deep capture area, I'd like to give a recommendation for ModernAire. We have one of their hoods and are extremely happy with it. Due to various constraints with a deck right above the kitchen, we couldn't get a remote blower nor an inline filter. So, things are a little noisier than we'd ideally have liked it. But since ModernAire builds all their hoods to order, we got exactly what we wanted. Our hood it mounted above head height and is extra deep to easily capture the front burners, even when you consider the expanding plume....See More48" wolf range or 36" wolf range and additional wall oven
Comments (4)What about a 36" cooktop and double wall ovens? What is more important - the amount of burners or the oven sizes? A 48" has a small oven and a reg 30" one - while the 36" range and a wall oven give you 2 larger ovens. How's you back? A wall oven will be more convenient. Then of course there is the quality of all the appliances you are looking at - get the best your pocketbook can handle - whichever configuration is best for you. Good lucK!...See MoreRelated Professionals
