Anyone else hate their ceramic cook top?
Comments (30)I feel so guilty even saying this because my children bought me a beautiful looking GE Stainless steel, ceramic top stove and I absolutely despise it! How I wish I could have had either another electric coil top or my fave - a gas top. Ceramic is a joke to cook on. It takes forever to heat up or to cool down, you can't leave anything simmering because it does NOT simmer, and nothing really cooks correctly. Who cares how "lovely" it looks if you can't actually cook with it. I wish I could return it!!!!!!! I am an experienced home cook, but the ceramic glass top is enough to reduce the most experienced cook to tears because it does not really work. You cannot simmer, fry, stew, or sauté correctly without taking the pan on and off. I finally bought an electric counter top skillet which I use for frying and sautéing. I use the glass top to boil pasta water, and tea. That's about it. I use my slow cooker for stews and tomato sauce or thick soups and my electric skillet for everything else. My stove bakes perfectly so I use it for baking. BUT to think that my children paid a fortune for this stupid stove is sad and just plain WRONG....See MoreDaylight savings time - like or not
Comments (50)Changing the clocks doesn't bother me at all. But I intensely dislike Daylight Saving Time. Seems like the day never ends when it doesn't get dark until almost 10 o'clock at night. I do understand why working people like it, though. For reasons I can no longer remember, (if I knew them at the time), Texas stayed on DST all winter. It was awful for the kids, going to school in pitch dark! And I think of that whenever year 'round DST is discussed. I would think adults could deal with less daylight in the evenings if it meant greater safety for the kids. One friend of mine said she likes DST because she doesn't like driving home from work in the dark. How is that worse than driving to work in the dark? Plus, my body operates on Standard time all year, regardless of what the clocks say. Rusty...See MoreAnyone else really hate the smell of Salvia?
Comments (37)I suspect my 'disgust gene' is attuned to something other than plant scents as I cannot really say I find any of them to be actually nauseating. Interesting,maybe...and i probably wouldn't want to bury my nose in a few of them...although I am utterly flummoxed by Jay's categorisation of s.greggii. I find its warm, spicy notes to be quite lovely. If anything, like a couple of others on here, I do find some of the more perfumed plants such as hyacinth, tuberrose, stephanotis, oriental lilies to be a bit headachey and overwhelming...but I think that is more due to the heavy pervasiveness. Rather than a few fugitive wafts on the breeze, that 'undertaker's parlour' scent of regale lily or paperwhites is just too concentrated and permanent and does overstay its welcome a bit. Doesn't make me feel sick though...it is just a bit over the top. Unlike artificial room fresheners and such which are just...nasty. I don't love nepeta but am actually mystified by the cat pee comparisons. I am plagued by local peeing cats and NOTHING in the plant world comes close to the horrific repositories our furry friends leave underneath a bush or sprinkled on the leaves. for the unsuspecting gardener. I guess it is all contextual - scents are never really neutral and always tap into underlying, deeper parts of our psyche...some of which might be very unwelcome....See MoreYay! Perhaps permanent Daylight Savings Time is coming!
Comments (97)Ah, county not country Sorry, I need better glasses but, in my defense, that's an infrequently heard phrase for me. My intent was to edify, not insult. The only time I delete a comment is when it's wrong - I was wrong and will delete it. Thanks. As for me, drive in theaters were fun as a kid (especially when in high school and with a date!) and handy as an adventure when we had a houseful of kids. We haven't been back since the kids were younger and still living with us....See MoreRelated Professionals
