Hi, trying to decide on new lighting for kitchen. any ideas? Planning to move the electrical over island and table.

Consider changing the light in the dining room as well and look for complementary styles vs the same. The dining table may better suit a linear (and hung lower).

Would you consider adding a pot light where the kitchen light is located (direct light towards stove) and add pendants over the island, to improve lighting functionality.

A bit vague but pendants are the usual choice for kitchens over islands . If wanting to avoid the electrician cost then look for alinear light . IMO your chandelier in the DR does nothing for the space since it lights the ceiling and is hung a bit high

Are you planning to keep the 189's farmhouse look in the kitchen? Or is it a more up to date kitchen design? If the former.. I would stick with more general room lighting appropriate for the design of the home versus fill the kitchen with recessed lights. If you do go recessed I would keep them very small and focused on specific task areas to add just a bit extra light the general lighting cant provide. Mike

you gave a lot of info about the walls but not the ceiling height. drop the light by the nook are to over the table. this will also get it out of the recessed area. over the fridge do a flush mount directional light. depending on a budget a rail light system is ideal. but you can also buy a light with 3-5 directional heads.

How permanent is your island? It looks freestanding, and I wouldn't do pendants if there were any chance at all of ever moving it. Pendants also aren't going to cut it for ambient light. They'd light the island, but that's it, and I don't see any other light sources in the kitchen. Most people seem to mix recessed cans with pendants, and I think that would work well in your kitchen. It's more electrical work, though, as you'd probably want 6 or more downlights, rather than just wiring a new fixture to the one existing junction box. If you want to just replace the central fixture, you could look for a flushmount or semi-flushmount that offers good light distribution in all directions. Or you could look at track lighting, which would give you the opportunity to place track heads around the kitchen where you need light. Some people pooh-pooh track lighting, but it can be a good and affordable option in a situation like yours. ETA: I was typing my response when you added your comment about the four pot lights. Where are they? I don't see them in the photo?

What is the ceiling height, what are dimensions of Island, what are dimensions of dining table........and I would DIE to paint the cabinetry white... and lighten up/change those counter stools.

The usual advice is to have all metal finishes the same in kitchen dining space. However, since you have warm wood cabinets, countertops, and furniture, bronze finish seems warmer than nickel. Maybe pros will chime with other ideas. Complementary features are bronze finish and semi-opaque white shade.

If you are going to have an electrician do the work, I would also have them add in a few recessed light, specially in the kitchen area. Have them linked to a new switch with dimmers.

If it were my space, I'd do all recessed; no pendants. I have a strong dislike of hanging light fixtures. Recessed lights never go out of style, there's nothing hanging to bump your head into, they don't visually clutter a space, and you don't have to clean them other than an occasional quick swoosh with a pole duster.
