Help with family room furniture and arranging please!
I have a large family room that has no available wall to put any furniture directly against. I need help figuring out a suitable arrangement. I don't like the sofa in front of the window. I believe the wall to the left of the fireplace is best for the TV, and plan to put ours on a swivel arm there. No plans to change fireplace mantle or brick. I think a sofa and loveseat, like our current mismatched set, offer good seating. I am open to a sectional. 90%of the time it is my husband and I. When the family is here, it is 10 people. Thinking of possibly having two small chairs in front of the window, possibly swivel or open arm chairs? Also need advice on curtains/window coverings. We don't have anything on the French doors, and haven't for years. No one can see in. I could be swayed to use drapes there. Baseboard heating as indicated on the drawing. Id say i have traditional taste Budget is about $5000, or am I dreaming? This is my first time posting my own photos, and forgive me if they are too small, too large, or not there at all! Thank you in advance.

Comments (8)How much seating do you need on a regular basis? I would be inclined to get a leather couch, that would sit to the left of the fireplace, facing the dining area. Sofa table behind the couch, with lamps. Nesting tables at the fireplace end, to be used as needed. Opposite, on the right side of the fireplace, a pair of chairs that recline. No ottomans, as I see that being an obstacle for your son. The recliners let you put your feet up as desired, but are not in the way the rest of the time. A nice table and lamp between the two chairs. No coffeetable needed. The tv moves to the stairway wall, where the couch is now. Wall mounted or on an entertainment stand. If there is room for the bookcase beside it, fine, but I have a feeling that wonâÂÂt work, in part because I believe I see the thermostat there. In that case, you could put another chair against the wall for extra seating. with a wall-mounted swing arm lamp beside it, and a narrow table next to it. Comments (2)i would not place over the fireplace, that is too high. you can put on an arm on the left side of the book case where the slot is for a smaller one or leave on the wall it is on, then i would give it a larger console. i think i would continue to have the sofa face the fireplace then have two swivels on the right side of the couch so they can turn to the fireplace, the tv, or the couch. i would not even ask about shelves i would quickly have them filled. if that step down gives a problem i think the least expensive solution is a slanted piece of wood shoved against it. well and glued down. if you ever want a little more color or zip, let me know can give you at the least some cool pillowsl. let me know....See MoreFamily Room Furniture Failure--Help with arrangement (very long note)
Comments (39)Move round table toward wall for now so you have a pathway to slider door. Not sure what the person you had helping was thinking but we ALWAYS map out walkways and “transportation” around and between rooms. The basic furniture is too large for your space but this is probably best arrangement for now. At some point, I would put chairs in a media room or game room. Two smaller scale swivel chairs in a complimentary fabric would improve everything. A “gate leg” table behind sofa would serve dual purpose. When leaf is raised 3 could eat a meal. I suggest you place the TV cabinet flat against the wall and install the TV on the wall with an arm not too high above the cabinet.

With all the doors and entrances to the room and be able to seat more people, a 4-seater sofa, 2 armchairs and 2 ottomans under a console table is something that can work.
Roman shades on your bay window would work nicely.

You can install curtains down to the floor on each side of the window and if they end-up falling in front of the baseboard heater you can install brackets that prevent the curtain from getting too close to the baseboard heater.
As for the door to the garage, you have about 38 inches behind the chairs so there should be space for an entrance mat/rug.And here's the look with roman shades and curtains...
