Laundry Room Appliances Design Dilemma

Do upper cabinets have to line up with lower appliances

I'm in a bit of a dilemma about what sizes upper cabinets to get in my laundry room. Should they line up with lower appliances? I have a 24-in. utility sink ( just purchased beautiful black and stainless one) then an 18-in counter, and then the washer and dryer which equals 57 in.. I have a total of 97 inches of wall. I must leave 24 in on the right side because I have an air vent I do not want to block and at that area I want to put a dowel to hang some drying clothes. Suggestions are appreciated. Thank you.

No, they don't have to line up.

Consider what you are planning on storing in them, though, and how often you need to access. Standard upper cabinets over washers/dryers tend not to be accesible beyond the bottom shelf for average-sized people. I basically didn't use the upper shelves in the cabinets in my last house - the cabinets themselves were too shallow for what I wanted to store there (towels) so were basically useless. In my current house, I'm planning on using refrigerator uppers above my machines for storing rarely-used items with a hanging rod for drying underneath, and just putting one upper cabinet over my sink.

Wow how awesome is the ability to photoshop! Elwydee's verson looks great! Think that's the same as the first one you did isn't it? Your 2nd verson with the added cabinet also looks great. From that angle it doesn't look strange with the ceiling change above. Nancy made a good point though. Maybe you could check out both of those isues with another mock up from another angle or simulate with some cardboard at home. RKB and Elwydee can you please share what photoshop software you used? I learn something new every day on this site! Thanks.

What they said. ^ I'd also say that it all depends on how many uppers you have and whether they form a solid bank around the perimeter of the entire space. If you're working with a kitchen designer, he can help ensure that your tops all work out the right way (staggered or even, depending on your planned look). My caveats, to be responsible about bucking the norm and why I did it: -- I have as much counter space without uppers as I do with, so I have plenty of room for freakishly tall appliances, should I ever need them. -- I cook a lot with very varied ingredients and tools and want things close at hand. -- My kitchen is fairly bright & sunny. I'm 5'8" or so and have never had a kitchen where I felt so comfortable working; friends who cook here tell me this all the time too. I think it's got a lot to do with the ease of these lowered uppers -- one of those small unnoticeable things like the tilt of a chair that you don't realize you'd been missing until you adjust it. What do you think of white upper cabinets and dark lower ones?

I currently have creamy white upper cabinets ,two 36"wide uppers have glass doors on either side of my corner sink. ( (Yes I love my corner sink) The lowers are dark stained birch. I have creamy white travertine look porcelain floor tile and St Cecilia granite which has a lot of orangish flecks so I painted my BS pumpkin. I did this house as a flip; we're living in it while we build The House. I picked the two color cabinets because the kitchen has two north facing windows and needed light, and it's smallish at 12X16. I wanted a white kitchen but couldn't convince my DH so we compromised. White on top, stained on bottom. Funny thing is everyone who comes here loves this kitchen! From friends and family to strangers who step in the door, to the plumber to the appliance repairman. All comment positively. So I'm doing a combo in the new house.

I would say it's considered standard practice to try to have the vertical lines of the cabinets line up. So it's not so much that if you have a 24 and then a 12 below that you have to mirror that up top, but that it would be considered ideal to have a 36" on the wall. That helps to provide a cleaner line. I have very few upper cabinets but they do line up and I feel that ads to the flow. With my cabinet doors especially because they are 42" tall and have a strong vertical frame. That said, I want to say that I consider that a TEENY part of the planning process. Part of where you weigh all the choices. There are numerous places I've been/worked on that don't have the line up that I feel totally great about. I also feel like with drawers rather than doors below it's much less of an issue.

I would say No, they don't have to line up. Just be careful with their height at bottoms. I have found with my own, I can't quite fit a front loading washer on a pedestal, under cabinet lighting built in (which is silly, I'm washing clothes not performing surgery) with those built ins above. 1955 lovely all tile laundry room but not made for today's larger appliances. Front loading and its a deep low reach for me if machine sitting directly on the floor. Although I do have a mechanical reach. I keep cleaning cloths, clean rags, those products used only occasionally in the cupboard above along with some specialty products used elsewhere in the house and outdoors. Step stool in the utility closet opposite wall and I do have one of the hand-held mechanical reaches for lighter objects stored up there. So far I've had to stay with a top loading washing machine -it's that or call in a carpenter!

I have a top load. There is an office here as well plus all the cat food supplies along with laundry detergents. So yes, I need some storage. Maybe I will do open shelves above the sink and then two cabinets then a rod to hang shirts or no dryer apparel.
