Debra: Sp Francis Busby

I saw your seedling post on Sp Francis Busby.In 2023 (?)you sent me a fan of Sp Francis Busby and last year I moved it to the new garden space. Lacks height but overall bloom color was spot on. It started blooming on June 23. Some pics to share. I'll see how it goes this year as we've had a much colder winter with on and off snowfall. Thank you for sending it. Love the bright color.

Julia - I grew Forever Red for about 10 years in a pot and it was rock hardy until our winter two years ago, when I lost it and about 25 others in pots. Insider Trading did make it in a pot that winter. And now that it's in the ground, it seem to be doing well. It's taller than most of my evergreens this year, and does have nice lateral branching on the fans that get the most sun. Debra

Jean and Mantis - The Ultimate Sacrifice has been one of the highlights of the season. It never had a bad day, and I was able to set pods on it with two of my favorite white edged cultivars. Maybe it will rebloom. It did last year. Nat and Maryl - SC Francis Busby is another star of the garden this season. With three rebloom scapes, it probably will be my best rebloomer. Maryl, it's registered as red, but it usually looks more like a dark orange here. Debra

Your Spacecoast Francis Busby picture and description has put this one on the "definitely going to get" list. It is now time for me to go with quality rather than quantity and several DLS are going to be removed in the fall and I want good plants as replacements. You really do have a lot of "hot" ones, those colors really stand out. Apache War Dance lives here and has last two blooms today. It's been a good one. Always love the pictures of Ruby Lipstick.

The styrofoam containers aren't that hard to find if you peruse your local thrift shops, and they have served me well for more than a few winters. Or you could try to get some at an aquarium shop or even at a department store that carries fish (oh, and King Crab - I've found those before) - someplace like Walmart. Tell them what you want the boxes for - they might be happy to oblige. The straw insulation is the plus that is key, I think. If they're out of the wind, and stuffed with straw, with straw around them, they are truly warm enough for a cat, who's winter coat is already thickened naturally by nature. They may not immediately test them out (though cat's are generally curious), so you can try sprinkling a little catnip in them for incentive. Alex
