How can I make my house look better?
Comments (17)It looks like the "front" (view) side has vertical siding. Is that the same as the "back" side? So that the horizontal and little bits of diagonal siding are only on the gabled ends? If so, I'd consider swapping out the siding on the garage end (and the far end, possibly, if it matters) to be vertical siding that matches the long sides. The funny bits of white trim can go, and I would also lose the contrasting corner trim (paint it to match the body of the house). If you don't need the light from the two windows above the garage, consider losing those as well. Maybe replace with a simple vent. If you're wanting to reside completely, I think a vertical board-and-batten looks great on a California ranch. Here's a thread from another board that shows a ranch with original B&B siding. If you scroll down you'll see a photoshop where someone has made the garage door B&B as well, so it all blends together. And way toward the bottom you'll see it painted in a dark gray. I think this type of siding works well with darker colors. Here is a link that might be useful: Board and Batten ranch....See MoreHow do we make this room look better???
Comments (281)I think that works well because the floors are dark too, no? I’m not sure how the dark railing would look with our light floors. We are going back and forth about painting the door white. I think it would modernize the look but when I’ve seen it done before it always looks so obviously DIY. I’m hoping to use the brass accents with the mid century decor to make it look a bit more traditional and match the formality of the door and stairway. The brass and glass table in the entryway was a great find. It was in my parent’s storage! They had painted it black and so I stripped it and cleaned it up. I can’t wait for the entryway rug to come. The vendor keeps pushing back the date and it’s driving me crazy! I keep trying to find another rug, but that light beige with the gray and emerald green accents is so perfect and there’s nothing else like it! I must say that the guidance I’ve had here has REALLY improved this room! Thank you everyone! I’m so sorry if it takes me a while to review and consider all of your comments... I’m indecisive by nature so each step of this is soooo slow...See MoreHow could I make my bathroom look better?
Comments (66)My first choice on the location of the caddy around the hallway's sink is behind the faucet above the backsplash (first picture). If you need to place high items in it then maybe you should place it lower (like first picture 2nd row). The reason why I don't like it on the side is because it is a narrow area and your arms and hands will always hit the caddy. As for the caddy,in the shower, it really is not a decorative element. Just think of it as functional. You can keep your shower curtain closed when it is dry. The only comment I have on the location that high is that soap scrum tends to accumulate on those wires. How easy will it be for you to clean it?...See MoreAnyone want to give some input on how to make the front look better?
Comments (9)Jinx, yes there is a small area on the other side of the wall. It’s not large enough to be an actual courtyard, but we have a pebbles and pavers and plants. We would like to tear it down completely, but the reason it is there is to provide privacy from the street since we sit below street level. And the master bathroom windows are right behind it. The beams have so many years of paint on them, I’m not sure stain is possible at this point, but maybe we could paint them a dark brown. Would you keep the wall the same color that it is now or paint it a different color? I’ve seen that the urbane bronze is all the rage right now but I’m not sure how I would use that since it’s so dark. As for the stained glass, I’m sure we will sell it! A couple years ago we pulled a 3 panel stained glass window out of the master bathroom! I’m curious what people do with them!...See MoreRelated Professionals
