It's March 2014, how is your build? Part II
Comments (150)Autumn--I have dimensions for you on the bench and took a couple of better pics too. :) The carpenters were there when I went down there, so I asked them how they built the middle shelves. They said they nailed and glued it all the way around and then put the face frame on. Hope that helps!! Dimensions: The tall opening in the middle is 18.5" high and 23" wide. The openings for the areas with a shelf are 22.5" wide, with the bottom shelf at 9" high and the top shelf at 8" high. These are all measurements for the openings, so do not include the frame. bluemoon--Glad you liked the fireplace surround! :) My carpenters are really good. I just give them the basics of what I want or show them a picture and they have not disappointed so far. For this one, I just wanted something simple and not too thick as I wanted to leave enough space to showcase the pebble tile that will go around the fireplace unit. I think they nailed it! (pun intended :)) They put the shelves in on either side yesterday. The counters did go in yesterday, but they were covering them up just as we got there, so I didn't get to revel in them and I barely got a few pics. Super white quartz on island: Carrera marble on kitchen perimeter and DD vanity: Brazilian black slate on DS vanity and Great Room hearth: As far as pantry goes, mine is a walk in but not huge. I know I want a counter top with in an L shape with one shelf underneath for larger items and then various shelves above. I had two outlets put in at counter level so that we can keep appliances like toaster and Keurig in there. Comments (96)Letters sent out today to neighbors on each side of our lake property with new house on the lot and our intentions. they have ten days to protest. We are in the setbacks, so I don't see any issues. Old house coming down April 15th. Sunny...you are moving along....See MoreIt's March, 2017- How is your build progressing?
Comments (169)I was up there earlier today. I had hoped to go up to the wood stove place tomorrow, but Massachusetts is expected to have a load o snow... we'll get cold rain down here in CT. At any rate: This is my house in snow, what remains today: (PS, two hours south at my home in Connecticut: "Leaves are Brown, There's a Patch of Snow on the Ground, And It's a Hazy Shade of Winter" - about one foot by one foot, and maybe 6-8 inches high -- the little that remains from the big snow a week or so ago...) Anyhow, back up here: Inside, Ladybug, Ladybug, fly away! I hear there were a bunch more when I wasn't around. I finally got to go out on my future back deck. I'd say about 1/3rd, or a little less, has been planked. It was a great day for my builders to be out there, and they enjoyed it. The dangly thing is the bathroom vent. The windows will eventually be framed in with wood. My first time out here! To the east... the steps will go down about where the ladder is, and will go about 2/3rds way down. Then there will be a 45 degree turn, flat. Then, another 1/rd 45 degree corner turn down, to the ground. Those stones off to the right? About where I will have a flagstone/flat stone patio. Lookin' back to the house.... Exterior color is named "almond", as per the unpeeled nut. The sun side will need a second coat, and it will all need a clear coat/preservative late this spring. By the way... the windows will only have grids on the top, NOT the bottom. Gonna be removed. I signed my sig in the basement. We are now adding in the workroom, root cellar, and the basement bath for cleaning up after man, er, woman-handling the livestock....See MoreIt's February 2025. How's Your Build Going?
Comments (31)@TDinNC We are in 8a and 8b, but Ground Source Heat Pumps (GSHP) will work anywhere. The earth is stable below 6' down across most of the country. In areas like the Dakotas and up north, add a foot or even two. That temperature is ~50 to 54F depending on where and what season. As @worthy mentioned, to do horizontal loops as I am doing requires a bunch of real estate, and if I were paying for an excavator and operator and crew, it would not pencil out when compared to the newer air heat pumps. I am doing it because I'm a geek, it is my one home build, and I am an operator and have that excavator at my disposal. That 100 ton pile of clay in the photo above has been a thorn in my birkenstocks for a while now. I laid it all down and covered two loops with it. Picture a rock wall along the side of the fill, starting at 2' and tapering to 4' and then following the terrain. It is some saturated gumbo clay. The machine settles into it about 6", so I schmeared it down like cream cheese on a bagel and wiped out my tracks as I backed off the fill. In 3 months it will not show a track mark in it. I have a big pile of organic laden soils to put over it and till and seed this fall. I am over-looping my system because I can. This is #3 I covered this morning. My brothers and nephew helping cover #4 this afternoon. We'll have it all in and also place 200 tons of spoils from the house excavation by the end of the weekend. I am using it to create a flat-ish north yard and that side yard above. It will amount to about 40 gallons of diesel by the end of it....See MoreRelated Professionals
