Divided Light Windows on Mid Century Ranch Home?
Comments (9)Thank you for the great feedback so far. No one thinks I could get away with divided lights? As far as changes, we are changing the windows on the far left (bottom floor) to french doors. They will match the French doors on the top floor above it. We are changing that whole section of the house to stone (top and bottom floor). The other areas where you see siding (in the center part of the house), these will be bricked in. The columns will be changed out to stone. We are getting a new cast iron balcony railing on the second floor. And if the homeowner's association approves, we are extending the space on the far right about 10 feet to create a garage with double wooden entry doors. Opinions? I also have a question... Does anyone know which French doors have the widest glass area - Anderson Eagle, Neuma (or) Marvin Integrity? We have a view in the back of the house and want to maximize it with the best door choice. I cannot seem to find these specs anywhere. Comments (9)I think you are already almost there! It's a great house with nice clean horizontal lines. Emphasize the horizontal with a more angular and wider path to the front door. Paint the front door a bold colour, add new exterior lighting and big modern house numbers. Lose the little bitty round metal trellises on the garage and go with bold, spiky and architectural plants rather than pretty flowers or billowy shrubs. Comments (13)I once owned an MCM house with vaulted ceilings and large windows throughout. I called it my Happy House because it was so sunny, bright, and cheerful. On the other hand, my mother owned a mid century ranch with flat 8’ ceilings, a hip roof, wide overhangs and high windows: it blocked out the light and was gloomy inside. It would not be practical to take my mother’s house and try to add all the features that made my house so pleasant to live in. There is only so much that a house is worth after improvements and upgrades, and it is wise to not over-improve....See MoreLooking for paint guidance - ranch mid-century home in CA
Comments (20)I think I might try 100% as kandrewspa asked. We had our exterior painted last year, and it was pretty amazing how our siding color lightened up. Also, as kandrewspa suggested, we had the painters do large swatches on all sides. We’re also in CA and have a ranch home, although ours is more Cinderella ranch than MCM. I see Revere Pewter has an LRV of 55. The Repose Gray we used (from Sherwin Wms.) is 58 so not that much lighter, especially in full sun. I would at least try RP at full strength just to see what you think....See MoreRelated Professionals
