Really this id for your grandaughter so money well spent IMO But of course you need to get permission to bulid anything in some one elses house . Are they in the U S then they have to have a closet to actually call this a bedoorm I would remove the dressers which look to me like a mess and go to Ikea and get an actual wardrobe delivered there and she can put it together .I have no idea how a closet up inthe air would be agood idea.I need to see the whole room post those new pics here in a comment DO NOT start another post .Ikas has some for les s thsn$300 Canadian and she can always take it with her too.

To obtains more suggestions/ideas you need to post more pictures of the bedroom showing all 4 walls.

I'm surprised that her mom doesn't realize that she needs a closet.

Some IKEA Pax units could be used - I've seen ones where people have added trim/moulding in order to make them look built in (and have added dressers/chests inside of them). The new Pax system is supposedly very easy to put together (one person can do it). I've never been to IKEA but some of the Pax closets I've seen have been amazing.

I would post more photos as suggested by lisedv above in order to receive more help.

Also - a simple closet made out of some wood studs and drywall wouldn't be very expensive.

As a mom, I am surprised that she isn't addressing this for her - it's nice that she has a grandma who is stepping in to help.

It's not a legal bedroom adn appears there's an outside door??? Is your daughter married to this 'step father'? Your only option is to do as suggested above. Rid the room of all the dressers and purchase a large proper wardrobe. Some have drawers built in. Depending on the age of the girl and where you live it's not really impossible to think hanging clothes is not necessary. Jeans/joggers/stretch pants all fold very nicely.

My grandaughter is 14 years old, her mom just doesn’t know what to do as it is an old house and closets were never put in, i suggested getting rid of the furniture and just getting a closet system, but her mom doesn’t want to get rid of it. The house is tiny. I am not comfortable building anything so i was going to suggest to them a solution. We were in the process of rearranging the room to get the most space. I have no idea why her mom or the stepfather dont seem to care about it or about me going there to help her. So my grandaughter cleared out stuffed animals, old clothes and i got her some under the bed storage items that was able to fit under the very low bed. Unfortunately the furniture is not the right size for the room, but i dont have that right to tell them to get rid of it. As she cleaned out the drawers, i moved and cleaned out the whole room, so she felt good about that. I just thing her mom is just disgusted that the house has no storage. So i was just trying to come up with a solution and hopefully the stepdad will be willling to built it. lol I surely cant build it and im not in a position to redo someone’s house. I know they sell melamine panels and through maybe just maybe side walls around the dresser and add a pole would work. She’s a. Good kid and likes to be organized but it just doesn’t seem to be able to happen for her unless they are willing to do something. At my son’s house where she goes to on the weekends she has a very big closet, and nice size room. But she lives with the mom more. I guess I will suggest options to her mom and go from there.

Can you measure the room and indicate the location of the windows and doors and post a little sketch? Also measure all the furniture in the room. I would be happy to do a plan as usually there is another way to place the furniture.

Look on craigslist for a vintage armoire, which was originally used as a closet and will have hanging, doors and drawers and very sturdy. If you don't like the finish, painting it is an easy fix.

Here's some armoires that I quickly found on craigslist near my home. They range from $35 to $200. Just to give you an idea.

Until we get a better idea of the size of the room and the furniture, there's no way of telling whether an armoire would even fit in the room.

Roseann, you said you helped your granddaughter clear out the room, so can we see a more recent photo? Sometimes you don't need more storage, you need less stuff.

There lies the rub, Grammy. . Mom has a ( new? ) husband, a husband NOT the father of this young girl, and your daughter seems not to desire to Rock the "Daddy" Boat. Best advice I can give you is to not mess in this room, their lives unless you shall alienate one or both parents.

I'd agree the room is a mess, the furniture is a bulky overkill.

You need a drawing and measurements of the total space, a conversation with your daughter, that she might THINK about what her own room had when she was this age, she needs to decide how important her daughters ONLY space to call her own, within the house may be.....

If you find no willingness to address this in a simple way, which is to BUILD a closet into the room after size of which is determined from a drawing of the actual space with all dimensions?

Then bow out.......: ) because whatever minimal expense to build a closet is just that. Minimal. It is studs, drywall. It is probably the only thing that will look decent, So WITH permission, pony up $$$ or go silent and let the sleeping dog lie.

Would the mother agree to move one white dresser to her daughter's bedroom at her father's house?

That would free up floor space for a Pax wardrobe (under $200) or an armoire (see good examples above) in this bedroom.

What about a simple clothing rack? It won’t be pretty but at least it will get the stuff off the floor. I have some clothing racks I found on craigslist that I use until I decide on a closet system.. This one is only $44.
