How much space on sides for 36" range hood insert?

Hello, we are considering building a custom range hood using 2x4s and sheet rock. The cooktop is 36" wide and we plan to get a 36" range insert. We will have upper cabinets on both sides of the hood. How much additional space do we need to accommodate for the hood before the cabinets can go?

A 36" cook top needs 42" insert for decent capture of odors and grease. THEN comes the desired cladding. This type of hood tends to look best in a style where cabinets butt to the hood cladding, or there are NO upper cabinets nearby.

You need the specs.....for the insert. We've no clue what style you are planning, the look of the kitchen or anything else.

We don't read minds, so you might show your kitchen plan with all the dimensions and appliances........walls windows, all of it : )) and an inspo of your desired look in the kitchen.

Drywall will be a grease nightmare so consider that as well .

Not everything is easy......

how will you finish, etc

I dislike clad hoods and for sure in drywall and painted . THe hoods get greasy and no matter how good th vent the steam from cooking also discolors the hoods over time You need to aslo consider the 2x4 construction in to the size of this monster hood by the time you are done , Sorry not helping I know but a good stainlees high CFM hood is still IMO the best choice . I also often do a hood with a bit higher CFM the same size as the range .

Hey folks. We've been using the 36" Zephyr Monsoon DCBL one-piece-liner with the following specs for a few months. We really hesitated to spend this much since our reno is essentially a budget/DIY one, but we are pleased with our purchase. Min.-Max. CFM 250 - 715 Min.-Max. Sones 0.8 - 5.8 Our installation is not ideal as our hood is mounted quite high due for head injury prevention reasons. That contributes to higher noise level and less efficient function. Overall, we are pretty happy with this hood. The hood can't keep up with extreme searing, but we are no longer routinely setting off the smoke alarm :) . It does move a tremendous amount of air at higher settings - at the outdoor vent you can see nearby leaves whipping around. I am satisfied with the noise levels, which was my major concern. At setting 1 (250 CFM) I hear a low hum, which does not annoy me if I am trying to chat or listen to music. That setting is fine for regular cooking and I am getting used to having the fan all the time when using the range. Setting 2 is louder, but still possible to chat or listen to music...and definitely pulls more air. Setting 3 is getting noisy, but I use it for shorter periods when frying bacon, etc. Setting 4 or 5 might suck up one of my children - powerful and loud. I like using Setting 1 when I notice lingering cooking smells after cooking in our large open concept space. The LED lights are pretty good. I like having a high and low setting. I like that all controls are on the underside rather than the front. Also, there are no LED lights when the unit is off (unless the baffles are due for cleaning) - also a plus. I like the feature that shows when the baffles are due to cleaning because I probably would not do this often enough. Previously we used two different builder grade hoods, and there is simply no comparison with the efficiency of suction and the noise levels, so this is a huge upgrade. I was thrilled to get free shipping of the hood to Canada from wayfair.ca. We never get free shipping in Canada!! Unfortunately the unit arrived quite damaged from the shipping process. The box was sturdy but the internal packing was inadequate. We decided to fix it rather than deal with the hassle of getting a remedy.

Some of your questions have been answered many times on this forum, and review of many hood threads will reveal the rationale for the suggestions. Here is a very terse summary: For a 30 inch range use a 36-inch wide hood to overlap rising and expanding cooking plumes. Try for a 24-inch front to back distance, and mount the hood high enough to not hit one's head when bending over the range. (Up to 36 inches with this size) These dimensions give an entry aperture of 3 x 2 = 6 sq. ft. Aim for 90 CFM/sq. ft., resulting in a requirement for 90 x 6 = 540 CFM. This has to be provided in the context of the blower's fan curve, the baffle, hood, and duct pressure losses, and any make-up air pressure loss. As a rough approximation, multiply 540 x 1.5 to obtain 810 CFM, the minimum zero static pressure rating of the hood system blower. Plan on having to have a make-up air system; see relevant threads. Hoods by their nature have to be steel, but can be made without elegant steel exteriors (hood insert) and covered with wood cabinetry. So long as hood cabinetry and nearby cabinets meet the required distance from the range to combustible materials, there is no reason why the cabinets cannot be connected to the hood cabinet-like exterior. You will see many examples just by looking for them. Most major hood manufacturers sell stand-alone stainless steel hoods and steel inserts for wooden cabinet enclosures.

LindaLinda2 I only posted that info because many people (myself included) have had no idea of the health issues with gas stoves. I realize you were semi joking about not being dead because I’m assuming you’ve used a gas stove for a long time. The problem is, the stoves maybe won’t kill you, but are they worth it if they “just” make you a little more unhealthy as each year goes by? There are many products that have caused health problems decades after using that nobody knew about at the time. Then it’s all “oh geez, I wish I’d know about the health risks back then. I would have stopped using (whatever).” Asbestos, cigarettes, sunbathing, talc, the list is long. Perhaps read an article so you are making a fully informed decision on you & your loved ones future health. “In fact, children in homes that cook with gas have a 42 percent increased risk of asthma.” “Electric stoves considerably outperform gas stoves. What are you doing for a fridge and what is going on top of that. If possible I would put a cabinet on top of that with dividers and put your sheet pans there. You have a 30" range with a 36" vent which is fine. But what's in the rest of the 4'6" (54") above the stove. I would take the extra 18" divide by 2 and take those 9" and make those side cabinets 34" (my math may be a bit of) - size of doors to be determined.

You need accessibility to the guts for this to be done. No part of the wood should be exposed, over the range. The insert needs to be 42"-48" and 27" deep for that to happen. And you need to understand and follow fire codes, and building codes.

If the OP will visit the Wolf Design Guide's hood section, some installation aspects will be found. Number one among these is that inserts are typically made "undersized," inch-wise, so that standard cabinet spacings can be used.

For example, on page 148 of the 2025 guide, one may see that the "42-inch" insert (called hood liner by Wolf) is 40-3/8 inches wide.

Framing w/ 2x4's will result in a really bulky aesthetic. Typically a hood insert surround is made by a cabinet maker which results in fairly thin structure - think 1" v 5" thick around the edges.

As others mentioned, a 36" range should have at least a 42" wide hood - big capture/containment area is good. The cabinet structure for it then might be 45" wide. With 2x4 it'd be around 54" wide.

Wood over a range is totally fine so long as it's high enough. Grease on surfaces like hood surrounds is only a problem with insufficiant ventilation.

We have a 60" hood insert enclosed in a wood surround over a 48" range. After five years of continuous and often grease heavy cooking (lots of pan frying, wok, etc.) including lots of dinner parties and guest chefs, our wood surround still looks new.
