The Department of teh INterior web site has a number of nomographs on historic repair. WHile probably overkill, they do provide a good introduction to the methods and techniques. Not all stone will survive an encounter with type S mortar.

It was a common practice to place, in block letters, on the garage slab, at the entry of the house from the garage, that, that was the condition of the slab. Included may have been "do not drill or cut", or words to that effect.

Annie, yeah, I've heard that. When the north end needed leveled, it wasn't as bad as the south end. A door that would stick and then UNstick, changing with the seasons. Some crown molding separating and a window not opening as easily as it should. dyhgarden, we opted not hire an engineer. The 4 companies that came out for an estimate all had similar readings. ghostlyvision, we know we're in for several repairs. Two of the piers have to be placed on either side of the front door....our porch is tile :( DH said he'll just replace with a contrasting tile (maybe something decorative) at the front door. We were told not to do any repairs for 2-3 months while the framing materials eased back into place and everything settled. tinam61, we used Olshan 8 years ago. That end of the house is as level as it gets. Comparing readings from 8 years ago and now, it hasn't moved. We're using them again this time. We had 3 national companies and one regional company to give us bids. We were torn. All of them gave good pitches. We decided to eliminate the low ball bid (it sounded too good to be true). Gooster, we had our work done before a major remodel as well (new windows, master bath remodel, walls opened, closets moved, LR to DR conversion, and porch reno). "Lifting foam"? I've never heard of that! MizGG, oh I forgot about the drywall screws popping! We've developed some cracks in tile grout but not tiles. This has been a gradual thing for about 3 years and then this year with all the rain...BAM! The foundation people said "a slab is built to move but everything on it, isn't". It may be impossible to find someone to do it because of the severely limited access, but spraying the walls with shotcrete or gunite reinforced by wire mesh is an option. These very dry forms of concrete sprayed under high pressure will stick well and fill voids, forming a solid wall. Much more likely to last than trying to cast wet concrete into forms.
