Help making MDF door decision
Comments (6)Elmwood has a fair number of 5 piece MDF doors. Note that their standard door backs are melamine for MDF doors. You have to specify matching backs as an upgrade. As said miter on paint is not a good idea. Nice idea about the 2 pc MDF door. There is MDF and then there is MDF- grading varies enormously- what changes he most is the density of the mdf in the interior compared to near the surface. This leads to the warping that ajc is referring to. There are companies that only make MDF doors, some of those exercise great care in ensuring consistent density of the material when it ships in. I doubt that most wood door mfg do that. I toured a mfg in Canada that has stringent standards for density consistency, of course it costs. Until I started with Elmwood I'd done very few painted MDF doors, didn't like the quality of what was ever available to me. My experience with MDF was generally working with it, not in doors. So far I've only done the one piece MDF-no problems with warping after a year, we'll see. So it I'm not going to offer a suggestion as to what you should do. I personally think that painted doors should show the seams with age on rail and stile doors. We've been looking at them that way for centuries. Not everyone feels that way though (guess you don't :)...See MoreNeed decision today, PLEEAAASSSEE help w my powder room decision
Comments (13)Good point Lavender. Now that you point that out, as a guest, I'd feel more encouraged to help myself to the closet if it wasn't full of personal belongings. To you, which one is the bigger bathroom ?? I think they are all aprox the same size and just configured differently. I remember when you were working on your big working pantry years ago. I'd love to see what your house wound up looking like. I assume it's been posted, if so, can you share your link? Red, you just gave me an in between idea. I could take up less room and have a closet with less depth that has pegs in it and space for some other items guest may want (a wrap to sit outside, or some slippers if their shoes happen to be muddy ---hey, I can hope for no drought, right?) Awww, thanks for the compliment on my plans. Scottie, thanks! I will definitely post the after pictures. They are breaking ground tomorrow morning so it will be a while. Soon we will be tackling my kitchen storage, so stay tuned for more postings :) If we do a bench, I think I like your idea of the trunk so we could store some more things So far we have one vote for the second to the last photo ......See MoreGarage doors decision help please. Comments (21)People often forget (and some never knew), that garage doors are often the single largest architectural element on the façade of a house. When there are more than a single car garage door, the dominance is usually overwhelming. Compare the image of a house with 2-3-4 or more garage doors visible from the street with older houses which had an alley and the garage behind the house. Which of the two houses looks more appealing and retains its inviting residential image longer over time? So...add to the size, scale and proportion of the garage door(s) the façade in which the garage doors are located, and you usually have a scale buster (architectural jargon) on your hands! It's one of the primary reasons many professionals on this forum advise against having the garage doors visible from the front of the house, especially if they project forward of the rest of the house and create the dreaded "snout garage"....See MoreFrench Door Decision...help needed
Comments (30)Ha I think Beth you may be the sole supporter of the darker doors. First, I will be one day replacing the front door but it’s not in the budget at the moment as the repaint and the French doors will take up most of the budget. I was with you on the dark doors and actually liked them when I originally had them stained. The problem is I’m looking to replace flooring in the house eventually. On almost every google search or home improvement show….white doors and trim are pretty much the norm and finding a floor to go with that seems more feasible. Darker gray walls however could be in the future....See MoreRelated Professionals
