Need advice for 160" curtain hardware

Hello! I am helping a friend moving into a new home that needs window coverings over a 140" double sliding door. Due to kids' needs in the homes, we can't have cords hanging and vertical slats or blinds that move horizontally across are not preferred. Pull down shades are being considered but are so expensive. Ideally, we'd do a double rod with a layer of sheers behind curtains. But, how do you do a 140-165" curtain rod without brackets that get in the way for the curtains to slide across. Where can you purchase heavy duty double traverse curtain rods? I can't find many that look good at this length on Amazon, Wayfair, Home Depot, etc. -- they are all tracks that are limited in colors, sizes, or would need some sort of covering. Would consider ceiling mount with 108" curtains if needed, but would prefer a more aesthetic rod option if we can find it. Thanks!

Most long rods are available everywhere, and not cheap, but affordable.

You'll be buying it once and using it for a long time, think price per use.

you should use a support, Just place it where their will be a natural split.

the door opening doesn't need to be centered with the curtain.

extend the panels beyond the opening, so when they are open, the whole window is revealed.

use a drapery wand to open and close, won't be too long for children.

Do you need privacy, light control? both, I wouldn't layer, just do a grommet rod for easy use.

John, At the risk of rubbing you the wrong way but it's for your own good... People who know more than you have told you how to do this job the right way and the easiest way on at least two forums I've seen you post. By removing the body you'll have a clear view of the area and be able to completely clean everything, which it undoubtedly could use. That would be the time to replace the drive belt if the belt is at all questionable... and use a REAL JD belt if you do. Since you know what you don't know you should spend $55 and buy the Tech Manual on CD (TM1975CD @ 1-800-522-7448) for your LT160 and learn the right way to do this repair. It will be invaluable if you plan to keep your LT160 and teach you a lot about every aspect of your LT160. All you need to do anything are the tools and the knowledge. You don't have the knowledge and the tech manual will correct that so if you have the tools and know how to use them you're ready to give it a try. BTW, that snap ring #2 in the picture does require snap ring pliers AND the snap ring is directional in that there's one way it goes on the shaft correctly and won't pop off. When you do it yourself there's no one else to blame so take a deep breath and do it the right way.

Thank you everyone for your feedback! I think my plan is to return these ones, and either look around for a more suitable curtain or sew some. I'll raise the rod to the ceiling and widen it, then have the curtains come just to the ledge. It's not perfect, but we're in a rental, and it will be a lot better than it was! I really liked the look of roman shades, but unfortunately I think they're out of the budget- especially as these windows don't seem to be the standard sizes the shades come in, so it would have to be custom, which I'm not willing to invest in in a place I don't want to be long term. For curtains, I liked the idea of the pattern because it has a nice red/rust colour in it and a blue, which are the accent colours I'm trying to pull in to the room. I find the room to be quite dull- doesn't get a ton of light, has wall to wall beige carpet, and white walls. I want to pull some colour in to it and liven it up a bit! I'll be looking to get an area rug at some point too, so maybe I'll do something with more of a pattern for the rug and plainer for the curtains. So if I've resigned to having curtains, I guess my next question is, do I go a similar colour to the wall (white/off white), or a solid colour (which one?), or different pattern...? I made 4 pairs of drapes for the biggest windows in my house this summer. You just need to make sure you get enought panels (or curtain width) to fit that big of a space. From what I read, your sliding glass doors are 96" wide with an additional 40" of wall space that totals 136" wide. That is a huge area to cover with the proper size of drapes. You will need drapes that are at least close to 160" wide, depending on if they are pleated or have grommets, to hang properly in that space. I also suggest hanging the drapes high enough to not hit the floor but float at least an inch or two above the floor. You may have to buy several panels or have these drapes custom made.

Of course people still use traverse rods. They have decorative ones now, not to mention the trac style ones. Modern style pinch pleats are much larger than in the past or you could use euro style pleats, both styles when used with an updated fabric, looks nothing like the pinch pleats of the past. Or ripplefold on the trac style rod. The problem IMO, with grommets are that they are overused nowadays and readymades can look skimpy. To the OP, if you're using metal, I would match the rod to the grommets. They don't necessarily have to match the other hardware, but not sure that silver will look good with brass. Also, if you're covering a patio door or wide window, you'll need more than one panel per side, if you're buying readymades.

@Rho Dodendron I just learned about this option which is wild after so much research that they never came up in a google search -- I randomly came across the suggestion in a reddit post! This is what I think we may go with. I know builders are making houses with these long walls of windows, how has this not become a more common product!? Ha!

I found the Remi Adjustable 0.81'' Double Curtain Rod on Wayfair Canada in the Kelly Clarkson collection. Hopefully you can search that out in the US. It is a double rod that goes from 120-170 with what looks like one centre support where the drapes would meet in the middle.

Just like hotel rooms, double rods are available with the use of a baton to have the drapery close and open. These can be mounted on the wall. $107.00

I have a really old discussion thread (maybe 2012?) where I talk about this.

We have one room in our home that needed a 38' long continuous rod.

We used electrical conduit (comes in various sizes); spray painted it black*, and hung it with brackets and used the "C" rings. (Only needed the "C" rings for the places where drapery would need to bypass the brackets, so that will depend on your set up.)

*In order to paint electrical conduit, IIRC we had to wipe it down with a vinegar solution, spray a primer, and then Rustoleum spray paint.

I've always hung curtains/rods on a limited budget, and it took me awhile to figure out that if there's a bracket in the center, you can attach 2 rods together with a male/male screw. This might let you use less expensive hardware.
