Need A Vision for this Kitchen!

Purchasing a “new home” and would like to update the kitchen. Built 2014. We are thinking of refinishing the hardwood floors due to several worn / light areas so we can lighten or darken them at the same time. Not crazy about the counter top. Brick backsplash looks odd to me b/c it’s only 1/2 way up the wall and is pretty dark. don’t want an all white kitchen and need to bring some light in the space. Would love thoughts on:

Remove brick and if so, replace with ? Or try to paint / wash brick?
Current countertop trends that might update the kitchen.
What to do with this range hood. It’s heavy and seems ill fitted between the windows.

Help!

beautiful flooring..beautiful counter IMO. Brick is roo rough. I'd get it out and repair and paint for now. the backsplash replacement in due time...no rush. The hood? not sure ...needs thought and discovery of possibilities. Dont be too quick w changes. Looks really nice for the most part.

I would move in and live with it for 6 months, or longer, and see how everything works for you, since nothing really needs to be done there right now. You may end up having to make repairs elsewhere, and will welcome having that extra money that you might spend on things, not needed right now.

Just found this thread (delicatus search). I just bought Delicatus Brown this past week. Busy granite!!! So, for my backsplash, I'm *hoping* to use Jeffrey Court Chapter 12 in French Creama (an off whitish/beigy color). I'm thinking of the 6x6's on a diagnol; and behind my sink area having an outline of box with an arched top and filled in with matching 1x1 glass tiles. Around this arched box (again, in the area above the sink) instead of the 6x6's, I want to use the 2x3 subway tiles in a brick pattern. So it will be done all in tone-on-tone but with the tile being the pattern, instead of different colors or borders. Anyway, I am going to wait too until I get the granite installed before purchasing the tile. If your kitchen backsplash is done, hoping you'll post pics. jody

Hi there. This was a really hard one for me to comment on because I have such an opposite kitchen with light cabinets. I think you need to choose your direction. Your kitchen can be a contemporary or traditional kitchen depending on a few choices. What is the dominant style in the rest of your house? Your kitchen should reflect your general style If you like contemporary style, then you already have a lot of the elements but need a few focal points. Your kitchen is almost identical to my friends kitchen except that her husband chose smaller metal tiles (And yes-her husband chose everything too. It must be a man gene that likes this particular combination). Their kitchen was really stunning when it all came together. They had several large pieces of art with stark white walls. One of the pieces of art was a huge painting in blue with koi. The other art were 3 pieces of 3 foot long ceramic bars hung vertically on the wall. They did not try to fill the space with lots of little things but instead used very large pieces that were a focal point of the kitchen. You could also go a more traditional route but will likely need to change your backsplash to have it really meld. A glass tile backsplash would be really pretty and might still be okay with the husband? How about a lighted pot rack over the island with baskets, pots and herbs hanging? (see below) Fabric around the windows, baskets on the ledge, chandelier shades, cushion fabric, new knobs, rugs etc would add more visual interest. I think your kitchen has a lot of potential, you just need to make it yours! I am really glad my husband could care less about decorating.

Unfortunately, I also cannot read it. Here are some tips...you may have already done these, if so, then ignore them! Draw up the kitchen space on graph paper (if you did this, I cannot tell, sorry!) Initially, don't worry about cabinets, appliances, islands, etc., just draw up the space. Measure and label everything...walls, ceiling height, widths of doors/doorways & windows, distances between windows, walls, doors/doorways, posts, etc. Mark all doors/doorways & windows (with dimensions) and label them as to where they lead. If they're actual doors, mark how they swing. Make note of traffic flows in and out of the kitchen It also would be helpful to see the connecting rooms, even entire first floor layouts (or whatever floor your kitchen is on), so we see how they interact with the kitchen and/or extend the kitchen feel and flow. What appliances do you plan on having (helps to figure out work flow, work zones, and types of cabinets...upper/lower vs full height, etc.) Range or Cooktop or Rangetop? Single or Double or no Wall Oven? Warming Drawer? MW? (Advantium, MW Drawer, OTR MW/Hood, countertop, built-in, shelf?) DW? Standard or drawers? If drawers, 1 or 2? Refrigerator (Top/bottom freezer, SxS, or all-fridge/freezer? Counter-depth (CD), standard-depth, or built-in?) Ventilation Hood? Other? Sizes of desired appliances (e.g., 30" or 36" or 48" cooktop; 36" or 42" or 48" wide or other Refrigerator? etc.) Pantry: Walk-in or cabinets? In the Kitchen or outside the Kitchen (e.g., Mudroom or hall)? Do you have a scanner? If so, it will most likely give you a better "picture" of the floor plan than taking a picture of it with a camera. If you must use a camera (I did when I planned my kitchen!), take a picture of the floor plan from above, not the side. You may have to put the floor plan on the floor and stand over it to take a picture. Zoom in on the floor plan so there's nothing else in the picture except the floor plan. You may also have to post a bigger size to be legible. I suggest posting a bit bigger here and providing an even bigger version in a Photobucket album for us to click to to review...either a direct link or create a public album on your Photobucket account and put the Kitchen Design pics there for everyone to see. Just make the kitchen pictures public, leave the rest private....no one will be able to see that you even have a private album, we will only see the public albums. Hope this helps and good luck!

Jennifer, I'm so glad you are surrounded by good friends and that you are cancer free. My mammo is coming up soon and dread it because you just never know if you are still free or if the demon has struck again. You spend too much time watching your back. So if you were to take the dishes out of the top shelves, what do you have stored behind the lower doors? You may want to consider your hutch an area that can hold some of your treasures. The entryway is an excellent area to tell the story about you and your life AND the hutch can hold a lot of "stuff". I've just placed all my good china in the kitchen and use it one or two days a week, and then go to my secondary china the other days. I have a very small kitchen but I stack stuff with small pieces of bubble wrap and use every inch of storage I have. In fact you might consider cabinets at the end of your kitchen, so the cabinets can face the dining room. You can do them with touch latch doors and get a nice built-in effect. I'll attach a photo of my kitchen/dr to let you see the cabinets under my counter and also to show you minimum dining space for 4 people. I would never specify such tight quarters for a client but with the large mirror and the built-ins it just works by a whisker. It doesn't feel tight....but rather cozy!

Pretty cozy colonial! Everything looks really nice but I agree, remove the brick. Just paint for now. I’d love to see a sconce on either side of the range hood…add the wireless led ones they’re super inexpensive, just yo see how it looks. Add a clock or art onto the hood to lighten it up a bit. Just enjoy that pretty kitchen once that brick is removed

Live with it for a while. I see lower cabinets that I would want to be drawer stacks, so that would bother me more than the colors of the kitchen.

New marble-look counters would be pretty, but for starters, while you live with the kitchen a few months, I'd paint the heavy black hood the same as the window trim, so that it blends and does not dominate the room like it currently does! If you paint the island your favorite accent color (blues and greens go well with these gold counters) that is a much smaller job than the whole kitchen, and breaks up the white nicely.

As for the brick, is there a less visible spot you can test removing it?? We just gutted my mom's old kitchen and her brick backsplash was the worst thing to get off a wall that my husband ever encountered. Total trash pile, chipping off inch by inch with an impact chisel, all the drywall was destroyed, etc. SO. It really depends on how it was applied. You may prefer to paint it, cover over with new material, or schmear it. I suggest first degrease scrubbing, then priming with oil based primer before putting anything else over it, as that will adhere despite any greasy residue from cooking.

I think most people just cut the wallboard out and replace it when removing tile. Getting ready for a new backsplash too and that is my expectation.

How rough is the brick? It looks like it would be difficult to keep clean. Grease, etc., will get caught in the nooks & crannies and be difficult to clean.

If that's the case, I would probably remove the brick now, just fix the wall behind it, paint it with washable paint, and leave it alone until you decide what to do in the Kitchen overall.

When remodeling, the backsplash is usually the last main item to be selected b/c it has to work with all the other elements (cabs, counters, floors, etc.).
