Help on doing 2-tone or single colour kitchen cabinets

Hi. I need to repaint my kitchen cabinets and trying to decide whether to paint all grey or two-tone (white top cabinets and grey base cabinets).I already have a small section of grey cabinets and will be replacing all of the doors to a shaker style, doing a full overlay door and removing the scalloped trim piece. The other ceiling moulding / trim around the cabinets would be painted the same colour as the cabinets.

The challenges are: 1-my walls are light grey and won’t be changing that (See colour samples against wall colour),

2-I have these built-in wall cabinets. What colour should they be in a two-tone kitchen? The colour of the base cabinets (grey) or the colour of the top cabinets (white)?

3-this extra trim piece that can’t be removed. I think it should be the same colour as the cabinet and other cabinet moulding, (so grey, if all grey cabinets?) but it will also but up against the door trim, which is white.

I'm not a fan of two-tone. Do all one color, especially with all the arches in the cabinets.

if the floor remains I would go warmer but there are issues.....The medium gray walls and gray section of cabinets dont work IMO. the room beyond has some nice warmth to the walls the rug and the floor altho it needs a stripping and refinishing. If the kitchen floor remains then bring lots of white sample paint cards and tape them up..... because the counter and backsplash are very clinical white......you have to work with that and the floor being brown............PERHAPS if you care to......a nice upgrade first would be a hardwood floor to ground this space / while refinishing the floors in the nice looking room beyond . Plan things for a cohesive end result even if done in phases. I dont see gray as a good participant at all.

same floor throughout.....a big payoff long term.

I forgot to mention I also have three different countertop materials. This run is vintage cabinets with Shaker doors, black marble (Karin, GW stone expert says it's limestone): Uppers and sink cab in this pic are from the old kitchen. New drawers have slab fronts, and trash pull-out door (to the left of the DW) is a new door. Recycled epoxy resin lab table tops: Old uppers, new slab drawers, new doors above fridge: The drawer fronts and cabinet doors to left of fridge are re-used from old kitchen, added to new boxes. Cabinet over fridge is new. This pic is before ceiling trim: Long shot, after ceiling trim was added. I like two-toned kitchens in general..and I love white plus wood even though I agree with chocolatebunny that on this particular picture the contrast seems a bit harsh, at least to me because of sheer size of the kitchen, I'd like softer transition in such a space..but in any case it is quite beautiful. Whether it'll work or not-the two-toned look- will depend on size, light, as have been mentioned, and more than that-on layout. One needs approximately even amount of lowers and uppers to make the look work, or will indeed feel too chopped Very good point on deciding what color the tall cabinets( pantry, oven, etc) will be -should be well-considered. Great advice from cpartist as usual-always consider everything you plan in the kitchen in general context of your house White/light Quarzt is cool(I have light off-white Quartz myself) and is usually very clean-because you'd be prompted to keep it as such, every crumb, you'll see it, and will be complelled to clean it right away. -be prepared though to see seams when installed. You'll forget about them soon but first time comes as a bit of a shocker even if the seam is actually quite good. You see it like a very thin pale pencil line. "Who drew on my counter?" lol

Circling back to thank everyone for their input! And share some pictures of our kitchen now that it's 98% done (we still need to install the pulls on the smaller under cabinet drawers). We kept the cabinets around the fridge blue and went with polished nickel hardware everywhere. We're so happy with it! I have two tone cabinets and love (blueish grey on top/black on bottom). It works well as the black blends in/unites our black appliances and counter and also with the flooring we chose.

It’s really important to consider the big picture.

Some kitchens suit 2-tone better than others and I have a feeling with its configuration, 2 different countertops, working with your wall color and flooring, it won’t be easy to achieve harmony. I’d use white on all the cabinets (same undertone in the counter or backsplash) or white on top/lowers the same color as walls. It’s about creating a fluid connection and kitchen will also feel larger.

Consider adding roman blinds and improving functionality/warmth of the coffee station area (a floating wood shelf will add interest and connect with counter, creating balance.)

I did my fridge surround and double height pantry the Sam as the uppers. I thought it would be too top heavy to do them the dark color…

Ooop, she did -- missed that! Still not a fan of two-tone, though. Go with all white. No grey.

Gray started trending 15 years ago and stopped trending about 4 years ago, when builders/designers transitioned to a warmer range of taupe colors. Lighter stained wood is trending now.

White has always been around, so definitely a safer choice.

I would not do 2-tone in your kitchen. It can work sometimes, but is usually the starting point and not a decision made at the end of the project when everything else has been selected.

IMO refacing costs as much as new so why not wait and do this right , do the flooring and redesign that litchen from the floor up . The you will have much better storage and an actual new kitchen that just will function and look better . I honestly do not see any reason to use gray and for sure no two tones in a tiny space . That corner could them have a counter all one height to give you more work surface , you need some kind of venting for the range and IMO what you are planning is the proverbial "lipstick on a pig " Do it right or do nothing is my advice.

Thank you for the comments. This is meant to be strictly a cospetic change and a new kitchen will cost at least 5-10x more as replacing the doors where I live. Doing nothing is not an option nor is spending $20k + to renovate. The existing bottom grey cabinets are not going to be painted and the colour of the pictures is off because of the lighting. The walls in both rooms are the same colour.

I would choose white as it will give you more flexibility to change the wall color down the road if you want
