Can't decide on combination of steam oven, wall oven, microwave
Comments (7)Here are my comments. Miele Combi Steam/Convection Oven - great choice. I would stay away from ANYTHING Thermador makes - expensive to repair, frequent repairs and poor customer service. I don't have experience with Electrolux, but the micro/oven combo I like is the GE Profile Advantium upper with a 30" convection lower (Combo is about $4,000). That Advantium oven does a MUCH better job than a regular microwave. Would not buy Viking, period, for the same reasons as Thermidor above. Viking took over the old Amana refrigerator plant. They are a great marketing company, but a poor product and service company. I'd suggest a KitchenAid 22CF panel-ready French-door cabinet depth R/F or possibly a GE Profile similar model if you're not going to put in a built-in refrigerator (SubZ et al). Miele dishwashers are great as are Bosch and KitchenAid, who now have the same type of filter system as Miele and Bosch do (they got rid of the built-in garbage disposals which make dishwashers much noisier). BlueStar Rangetop is fine. Personally I like Capital Culinarian - 25K Btu on 5 of the 6 burners and I think a 12K Btu simmer burner. Getting back to your oven situation, i'm in a remodel now where I'm putting in a 6-burner Capital Culinarian all-gas range with a Miele XXL Combi-Steam oven. No need for a 30" convection wall oven or a built-in microwave. Our microwave (which we just use to reheat beverages primarily) will be an under cabinet GE Profile model (cheap - $350). the Combi-Steam oven does a much better job of re-heating leftovers than microwaves do and it's great for steaming, roasting, baking bread, etc....See MoreWill have a range and wall oven, add a speed oven or microwave?
Comments (6)@plllog--thank you for the wonderful review of the Advantium. I have been considering one, but I don't want it in my oven stack since it won't match my non-GE oven selection. I don't care for any food that is microwaved and I believe the speed cook option combines microwave cooking with the other heating elements. Microwaved chicken (or leftover chicken for that matter) is one of the ickiest things in the world to eat IMO! If I need speed but the microwave won't do, I tend to reach for my convection toaster oven with great results--even for potatoes and casseroles. Not as fast as steam, but quicker than the large oven. @huruta--how do you like your CSO? I'm trying to decide on a double oven vs. single + CSO. My concern is crisping in the CSO and cleaning it since I don't believe they are self-cleaning. I'm thinking a 48" range top with grill and griddle, plus oven combo and microwave drawer since I can't say I'm that drawn to a convection microwave for the same reason I'm not drawn to the speed oven. Am I missing something on the speed oven? Or the CSO? Or a microwave drawer vs. a convection microwave? @oliverchang10--I also like the idea of both gas and electric. I've been cooking with a gas oven for years and find I prefer it to electric, but I keep hearing electric is more precise. Can you share your reasons for wanting both? Thanks to all for sharing your experiences and thoughts!...See MoreHow do u integrate a microwave and a wall oven into an oven cabinet?
Comments (3)If you must have a wall oven (see your other thread), then put in a wall oven at a comfortable height and then have an alcove built above it. The interior of the alcove will have to be finished to match the outside - so be sure to specify that when you order cabinets. In addition, you will need to put an outlet in the alcove to fit the MW - it may have to be on a dedicated circuit, check with your GC and/or electrician. Now, just buy a countertop MW that fits inside the alcove with enough room to open the door fully and provide the required clearance around the MW....See Moredouble wall oven vs microwave convection wall oven
Comments (5)I just removed a 17 yr old KitchenAid oven/microwave combo. The convection oven was great until recently, but the attached microwave died after 2 years. I'd advise to get separate appliances, not attached combo appliances. If one of the attached appliances fails, it's an expensive repair. We've been using countertop microwaves for the last 15 years. I replaced the oven with a GE Twin Flex double oven. I had a shelf built above it & a new outlet installed, and put a new countertop Panasonic mw there. So glad to get the microwave off my counters! . I looked at the small convection/mw speed ovens -- many here love them. But I wasn't sure how much ventilation space we'd have for one. Plus if the Panasonic fizzles out after a couple of years as microwaves are prone to do, it will be easy to plug in a new one. Here's the Twin Flex, two ovens in the space of a single oven. So far, it's been terrific. I'll post a picture of my set up tomorrow, even though the mw isn't trimmed out yet....See MoreRelated Professionals
