Healthy Lifestyle Progress - Week of 4/23
Comments (21)Congratulations @Faron79 on the weight loss and A1C progress! Huge achievements! Really great to hear @legomom23 finding a system that works for you. I think that's definitely the key. I am working really hard to motivate myself out of a bit of a rut. I am slowly losing a few winter pounds, but am really really struggling to take any off. I've been working hard to do 2x 36hr fasts per week and it's helping budge the scale a little, but not much. Frustrating for sure. Otherwise I'm trying to focus on eating healthy foods and being more mindful of snacking. I've also been doing well sticking with my no alcohol during the week plan to keep my alcohol consumption really low. It's never been a big problem for me, but I feel it is healthier for me personally to not drink alcohol most of the week, and then only in moderation when I do. Today is another 36 hour fast. Wish me luck as I power through this. As far as exercise, I am struggling with a really sore shoulder/back/side/arm situation. It's hard to pinpoint exactly what's wrong, but basically any effort with my left arm, especially over my head, is quite painful. Sometimes it's been painful just doing nothing at all. I took an extra day off of swimming (between normal non-swimming days) to try to rest it and it's a little better. Massage this Friday evening should help too. Meanwhile I'm trying to keep running (weather is finally warming up) and swimming most of my other normal days. My sweet sassy dog has been a little aggravating to run with. I want to speed up our runs a bit, but she just doesn't. It's important to get her exercise too, so I won't leave her behind. I did have the vet check her last year when she was doing this to make certain nothing was wrong. One frustration I ran into last weekend: photos. I am terrible at posing and apparently I sometimes pick unflattering clothes. We had a big get together at our house and the group decided to do a group photo quickly with a phone. I was wearing a brand new shirt and feeling reasonable about myself after my weight loss over the last year. But when I see the photo, somehow I'm sticking my stomach out and my shirt is bunched up unflattering. Bottom line, I look like I have a gut. I don't think I do, but that's sure what it looks like. UGH. On a positive note, the ladies at our get together (that are mostly younger than me) commented on how good my skin is looking. I do hope that's a reflection of trying to eat healthy for many years (despite over consuming calories through certain periods) and I hope I can keep it up. I certainly can see some aging in my face and definitely in my body, but I hope my efforts to take care of myself, eat nutritious foods, get plenty of exercise, make a difference in the long run. On a final note, I am really bothered by the judgement I sometimes hear about peoples' weight and bodies. A woman I know is beautiful and has always been thin, sometimes extremely so. She has never once had to worry about her weight. She exercises to have a body builder type body and it shows. But she has never in the 25 years I've known her needed to do anything special to maintain or lose weight. She made a comment about a lady at her gym, who in her words, was heavy but was working out a lot. She commented that the lady must not be eating well, otherwise she would be thinner. It really got under my skin. Ever since adulthood, I have struggled with my weight. Even when I am exercising 6-7 days / week and eating healthy foods, I absolutely still struggle with my weight. This is the first time in a long time that I've felt like I am making progress and it has taken an unbelievable amount of self control and quite honestly, hunger, to get here. Every body is different. Different metabolism. Different capacity for building muscle. Different bone structure. The amount of effort one person might need to put in to maintain a healthy body weight is different than the amount of effort another person may need to put in. And I am so sick and tired of the judgement and the assumption that being fit and thin only requires exercise. I didn't know what to say to her so I said nothing, but I wish I'd had a thoughtful way to help her understand that not everyone has the same experience that she does with weight. Apologies for ranting, but I feel like I don't have anyone with whom to share that frustration....See MoreHealthy Lifestyle Progress - Week of 7/23/2023
Comments (11)@lucillle - Pilates has so many great things going for it. I bet you get stronger quickly. @Sueb20 - walks and cooking at home sound like the healthiest of weeks. have a great time at the beach. @Funkyart - You are a healthy lifestyle star! It's a long process, so of course you will have weeks more challenging than others, but I know you will bounce back. I really hope you will become comfortable with the walking sticks. I think all the benefits - being outside, stability, freedom, exercise - will really be worth it to you. And please don't let one picture upset you. Everyone can look off in candid pictures. That's why most people take about 20 and then use filters:) It's a very brief second in time, 2 dimensional, with possibly distorted angles. It is not how people see you. I listened to yet another really good podcast I'd like to share. This one really hit home for me I guess, because although the guest was an expert, he was also an actual trainer that had worked with mostly women for the last 20 years. And it's something about knowing what works for real people that makes me want to try their ideas. His wasn't anything new - the old building muscle line :) But for some reason the way he said it really hit home with me. He talked about muscle giving you the flexibility to eat more/not be so strict with your food choices. I've heard it a lot, but he pointed out he would physically train his clients for a month or so before they even talked about food. Because the small change in muscle, strength, the way they carried their bodies, all made them believers. He also said if he had a client that would work with him AND a therapist at the same time, the results were phenomenal! The psychology of food, eating, weight, appearances - it's pretty complicated stuff. So I did pretty well this week, prioritizing 15-20 minutes of weights before my walk. Walking is good, but this is going to be my number one priority for awhile. If I still want to walk or play pickleball, etc. in addition to my weights, then fine. But they are getting done every day. Here's the link to the video podcast- Focus on Muscle - of course you can find it on Apple or Spotify if you want to listen. @Feathers11 - your post from last week was right after I listened and I thought to myself - that's exactly what he said would happen! Keep us posted on the gym plan. I'm considering that myself, but for now I have enough weights and equipment at home to keep me going for awhile. I hope everyone has a great week!...See MoreHealthy Lifestyle Progress - Week of 6/23/2024
Comments (45)The prep is the worst! I cannot drink anything I don't like the taste of so I put off doing it for years because I knew I would not be able to get that drink down. But, like others, colon cancer runs in my family. Doctor gave me pills to take. It's a LOT of pills but to me better than the drink. The actual procedure was nothing. I usually have a hard time coming out of anesthesia. I'm usually very groggy for an extended period, but I actually woke up feeling amazingly refreshed after the colonoscopy. Like I had the best night of sleep ever. Hubby took me out to my favorite brunch place after and it was the most delicious meal I ever had! My brother had colon cancer last year. He's finished with treatment and got a clean colonoscopy recently. Whew! Because of family history, I was told I need one every 3 years. I think I'm due again next year, or maybe 2026. Can't remember. The saddest story is my daughter's friend from high school just passed away a few weeks ago from colon cancer. He was 37!! It was stage 4 when he was diagnosed. So awful. My brother (a retired doc) told me that they're diagnosing it in people younger and younger and the age to start getting colonoscopies is coming down. Scary stuff....See MoreHealthy Lifestyle Goals - Week of 2/2/2025
Comments (8)I am really enjoying being well and having FINALLY healed from my two surgeries! It is such a relief and a very good warning to me that the Hashimoto’s has not only wreaked havoc with my metabolism but with all the processes, including cellular repair / healing. The weather her has been simply fantastic and I am playing golf twice a week and having a golf lesson on alternate days. I am so active I’m falling asleep earlier— a mixed blessing as I’m also waking around 3 or 4 am and struggling to get back to sleep. Overall though I feel like I am back to my own normal, which has been a long time coming. Socially February keeps us busy with Valentine’s Day (our anniversary dinner out and volunteering for the V party our church hosts for residents at an apartment complex we built for low income senior citizens),two events at the historical society, our Bishop’s visitation lunch and my nephew’s visit at the end of the month coinciding with our cocktail party. (He doesn’t know it but he is going to help me with it 😉) I do best mentally when I am busy and engaged so hopefully between all these events and golfing I will emerge from February ready for anything! Funky, 11 lbs is a LOT more than people realize. I once saw several sacks of oranges that totalled 10 lbs …. mind blowing 🤯 You are doing WELL!...See MoreRelated Professionals
