Another big box story that makes you scratch your head
Comments (18)Paul, I do agree that price is not a minor issue, especially in this economy. I think it could put smaller nurseries in a bind though, isn't that right? Someone posted that nurseries need the support of their customers to stay in business. I can see that point too. I am willing to give support to nurseries and I can adjust my gardening to try to do that. I don't want to give support to a nursery that is not meeting me half way though, and not keeping in mind that all their customers are effected by the economy too and trying to save them money as much as possible. Trying to manipulate me into buying a hanging plant that costs $50. by using a very popular plant only in that hanging basket and eliminating the less expensive six packs of annuals, doesn't make me feel so supportive. I was told that the nursery that went out of business last year was spending what sounded like a small fortune for oil. The owner had been having health issues too, so that made it difficult to just keep up let alone be innovative and in the end, he needed to let it go. Yes, you are correct, changing an existing greenhouse to solar may be very expensive. Constructing one from scratch to begin with might be cost effective in the long run. Ken, I think you may have missed the point I was trying to make about plants not being watered at a box store etc. I wasn't complaining about the lack of expertise at caring for plants there, or expecting any, but a business that allows such losses of their inventory and then passes it along to us. mxk3....yes, I could express some of my dissatisfaction to management at more of these nurseries, but I have already done that at the large nursery that I don't like to shop at, with no effect. Sometimes I think that most people, companies included, don't really want to hear complaints or suggestions and are not very open to doing anything differently then they are doing them. I do respond though to a company that expresses an interest in what their customers have to say....See MoreHow much money would you spend?
Comments (35)We will be moving next year and this is a discussion we're having. Like pal and chispa, we'll have a budget--and the price of the home plus necessary improvements has to fit in that budget. Looking at houses on-line, there are some I immediately start adding numbers on--flooring, painting, new kitchen. I'd rather buy a house that needed those things and was priced accordingly, though--especially the kitchen. For selling purposes, keeping this same concept in mind, we'll be repainting most of the house before listing it--Shaker Beige. I don't want people thinking "Oh--I have to paint that." Maybe they'll hate Shaker Beige and prefer a grey, but I figure beige won't keep people from looking at it (the purple/green in one room and deep teal in the other might--which is why we're painting those bedrooms). Our bathroom/kitchen/floor/lighting choices are all very neutral--I hope noone looks at ours and thinks "I'd have to spend $60,000 before I could even move in"...See MoreWhat are some products you would love to try before you buy?
Comments (38)I rent through AirBnB. I set the price, they take (I think) 3%. As soon as the person books and I accept it, I can communicate with them, through the site. When they arrive, or on their trip to my home, I offer my cell #. The last couple that was here used my kitchen for most of their very healthy meals. They also worked out every day. I have only been doing this since June but have really enjoyed meeting the people who have stayed here, it has been quiet since the hurricane season is in full swing but hopefully some bookings will happen in the next few weeks....See MoreStarting from scratch. How would you furnish & layout this room?
Comments (7)From this point forward, please have an overall plan before you get or do anything (for a unified look). First order of business is to figure out what style you have. Put in top search box different styles, one at a time. Examples are casual and transitional. I don't know about you, but if I had the choice of looking at a blank wall or looking at a window view, I would chose the window view. Therefore, I recommend that you flip that couch to the other wall. How about some tiny side table on each side of the couch, and an upholstered chair? How many people usually sit in this room? I would add a rug as well. Make sure it's big enough to have at least the front legs of each seated unit on the rug. Lighting is often an afterthought, but it's actually very important for atmosphere and practicality. I recommend a table lamp or wall sconce in each corner at chest height. Do you have any inspirational items to give you ideas, such as a favorite clothing item, accessory, or knick knack? How about some art for the walls? Get from your local artist, art gallery, or art.com. If you get a print from art.com, get it framed locally. If you like to match the interior of the house to the exterior, here are some ideas: https://www.houzz.com/photos/query/cape-cod-interior/nqrwns...See MoreRelated Professionals
