Therapy Office Layout and Decor Ideas!

In desperate need of help regarding both decor (especially for the built ins and mantle) as well as layout.

For context, the doors on the left-the first one (see photo 2) doesn’t open and the further one closest to the built in is a closet (seen in photo 1). I don’t have exact measurements yet but ~240 square feet.

I added photos of how the previous therapist had the office laid out. I’m hoping to have a couch, accent chair and place for a desk. I hate the idea of blocking the fireplace like you’ll see in the photos.

In an ideal world, my desk would be able to face towards the couch. I’m a nurse practitioner and often sit behind my desk to allow for documentation throughout the appointment. That said, it’s not a non-negotiable, I’m open to whatever layout is most aesthetic

Regarding decor, I’m not a fan of the color of the tile on the fireplace. Does my color scheme need to be centered around that green color? Is contact paper over the tile something anyone has had success with?

Most importantly, I’d appreciate suggestions for decor for the beautiful built in bookcase and the mantle.

Talking with a therapist whose sitting behind a desk is not my idea of a comforting session.

The right colored blue sofa with green pillows might work with that fireplace tile.

Small client sofa where desk is currently located. Therapist chair across from it between two doors but pulled into the center of the room. Show us a picture of the wall where the door to enter the room is located.

Are all of your files online? Do you just need small desk upon which to use your laptop? Try to place it on the entry wall. Get as small of a desk as possible.

Don't put too much decor on the shelves. It is distracting. Add some books, a few items here and there.

What colors do you like? I'd find ones that coordinate with the green but they don't have to have the green in them. I think that contact paper is going to look cheap.

Get a rug and place the front legs of the sofa and therapist chair on them.

No leather sofas.

It depends on what you do in the office and how much you want to spend, but I would: Get rid of the rug entirely and leave the floor au natural, but add a desk chair mat under your chair to protect the floor. Add a few tall shelves or bookcases, depending on what you need them for (files vs equipment vs books) -- Ikea has some nice options that aren't expensive and are easy to assemble. I'd add colour to the window covering (different drape? coloured tie?) and then decide if you want art work/photos and/or a corkboard/white board. If your peripherals (like printers, etc) are small, you may want to consider something like Ikea's Kallax series, because they could fit in some of the boxes, while you use others for books or baskets. I wish I'd thought of that before I got the storage unit I did.

Commercial office acoustics: When you go to a church, you feel religious. A lot of that has to do with church acoustics. Office acoustics impacts visitors' first impression a lot as well. People unconsciously expect to hear certain acoustic qualities in a professional office. This space, while has a lot of aesthetic potential , but hard walls, ceiling, and floor, ----- factory acoustics may or may not give a positive first impression to your clients. Only you can tell. Carpet and rugs are not effective for speech frequency improvement. The two large art canvases can be better if you have 3" thick fiberglass behind them. Have them hung near the conference table. Where you have the conference table may not be ideal. Low building, single glazed windows will have annoying outside noise infiltration. Also, a possibility of sound transmission from next door tenants thru air conditioning duct. Lack of speech privacy can be a deal breaker for some financial and legal clients. Glam Office Layout Advice Needed

Thanks for info. Your other stylish rooms offer a good guide to what you like. I suggest going for spacious elegance rather than glam for your office. Your wood desk is clearly in full use and has nice color that matches the stairs' wood. Start by removing all the art, lamps, floor lamps, knickknacks and anything smaller than a basket ball. Put them all on the dining room table for a while to be out of the way. Then trade the wood table with the chair-with-occasional-table. Put the shiny black lamp back on the desk. If you love the New York skyline print, hang it back up. Then pick some new bold graphic artwork (same strong impact as your art in the dining room) for between the sconces. Add one bowl or decorative item to the console table. Store the rest of the items to rotate every few months with the change of seasons. Fresh flowers or green houseplants that give an air of thriving life are much more attractive than fake greenery. A gorgeous coffeetable book or nothing at all on the occasional table would be much better than piles of books. A fine old edition, if you prefer those to coffeetable books, could be showcased on the console table. If you have a second chair to match the first, bring that in for guests. Remove the coffee table which serves no purpose.

Do you have any existing furniture you are planning to use? How do you like to be oriented when speaking to a client? Across a desk/table? Next to them in a comfortable chair? In a living room type set up with a loveseat and chair? I would start by making some decisions about furniture and layout. For therapy, I think the room should feel comfortable and warm, with adequate but soft lighting - no overhead tubes. I would layer lighting with lamps. Nice abstract art - nothing too bold or distracting. A green plant or two. No clutter. Visually quiet. And please take care when selecting a chair for your clients. It should be comfortable but not super squishy or deep - so people can get up easily.

This white hearth cover for the fireplace. Closing it off will feel more cozy and comfortable.

Leave the green tile... And the green goes with plants, you should have living plants. .

Without dimensions it's difficult to say exactly what will fit in the room but maybe something like this can work with a small desk. Is there any lighting in this room or will it only be table and/or floor lamps?

I’m hoping to get dimensions this weekend and will update. I will also take a picture of the wall that the door is on. I know it’s about 210 sq ft.

Depends on how flexible you are:

Desk - smaller/only one drawer and adding organization in the closet for files if needed.

Seating - would a comfy chair and love seat work and you’ll have more flexibility layout wise.

Fireplace/bookcase - I think if the green was decorated around, it could be a lovely feature and decorate bookcase based on practical vs decorative needs. I’d actually paint the wall the same color and add shelving above radiator for balance, creating a lovely feature wall. Paint color and rug are important decisions

Layout: narrow down seating and desk type and find an on line room planner, adding dimensions and structural components to see what suits/meets your needs.

With all those doors, window and fireplace in the room I think a floor plan showing all dimensions is necessary to figure out what can be done for a furniture layout that will work for you.
