Diagonal upper corner cabinet or not? Also help with layout ..
Comments (16)Do you have one of those exterior wrought-iron staircases that look super cute from the outside but bring up terrifying images of slipping and tripping to death in winter? Yeah, few houses with that particular kind of detail were built in the U.S. after WWI. In fact, if that house were in the US I'd guess Victorian. But you guys held onto the Euro look a lot longer. While these diagonal corner cabs aren't as popular on the forum for aesthetic reasons, I truly do think they are useful IF you know what you're going to store on each shelf. The top shelf is always a once-in-a-while type of space. Really sort through your stuff and see what might find a home there before you decide. Try to play with one in a showroom, and maybe bring your cans or whatnot along to experiment....See MorePictures of your Upper Corner Cabinet Please!!!
Comments (3)I vote no mullions (actually muntins). It can get busy with the horizontal lines of the mullions conflicting with the horizontal lines of the shelves. Sometimes you can line these up but due to hinge locations, sometimes you can't. Secondly, I think if you have glass doors you intend the contents to be fully seen. The cleaner look that you get with the frame only (no mullions) is more updated and in keeping with the more pared down streamlined kitchen styling of today. 3/8" thick glass should be sturdy enough for your plates. They would be nice if you are going to light the inside of the cabinet as they will allow the light to shine through. If not just use finished wood shelves. The interior of the cabinet should also be finished to match the outside. Comments (1)Katy, Do you have a layout diagram that you can post? There are some very gifted GW'ers here, both professional and non-professional, who have an excellent eye and superb ideas. Not knowing how small your small kitchen really is, I would be reluctant to give up that corner counter space. I do have a corner upper- love the extra deep storage it allows. We were originally going to have two upper cupboards go all the way to the counter. I love the look- was excited about storing my tea bags in little drawers... but long story short... the bottom part of the cupboards didn't arrive with our initial cabinet order, and we have since discovered that we are using that counter space. So, we are really glad for the 'mistake'. Never having had a really long run of useable counter space before, I didn't know how valuable it is. Now, two, and when kids are home, 3 or even 4 adults can work in kitchen comfortably. If the area is big enough for a MW- that might be a good spot- but I'd leave counter space under it....See MoreUpper corner cabinet help
Comments (27)I meant use a bookcase and a blind corner on the upper corner....a blind corner on the base w/ a full height door and a Lemans pullout. I do this all the time. easier to balance things out. Here is a quickie rendering...sorry if everything isn't as u want it....didn't have time to do moldings. But just a size reference. Change hood to 36" wide. It will look better and give you more capture area. Other bonus? The doors won't swing into your hood and damage hood, doors or both!...See MoreRelated Professionals
