Please help! Renovating ugly gas fireplace with glass cover
Comments (1)1) not a problem 2) replacement glass is expensive, try rutland products "white off" 3) you cant mess with the logs, the unit is tested and listed with the logs that are inside. they cant be re arranged, they cant be changed they have to be exactly like they are in the manual. If not, all sorts of problems come up. Delayed ignition, sooting, carbon mononixe etc. If you dont like the logs you have to replace the entire unit. The brass trim might be able to be replaced with blak. Look in the bottem control panel, get a make and model. and call the local dealer that sells your brand. Or post it here and i will see what i can find out....See MoreHome renovation - dated fireplace / built ins
Comments (30)Thank you everyone - will definitely close up the niches! Behind the sofa is another odd challenge. The owners moved a staircase to open up the floor which is great - but it creates that odd wall. Our contractor suggested removing that and replacing it with a bannister like the one in the adjacent room. As you can see, the stairs going to the lower level now look like you're going into a dungeon. Taking out the wall to the floor level and opening it up with a bannister I thought was a great idea to make it look less like a tunnel and open up the space even more. Also want to replace the ugly hand rail. Not fond of the cut out - thought I could wrap the columns with trim to make them look like they should be there. By now you're probably wondering why we bought this home - but it sits on a golf course with a fabulous view and in a lovely community. Love your input - any suggestions for this are very welcome!!...See MoreNeed Help! Fireplace Renovation
Comments (3)Looks like you need to demo the whole thing to the fire box, then build it much smaller so you can balance the built in with ease. I would assume you will want a tv to the left side? in that case it would be ok, or make sense for the left side built in to be larger. As to Code, you really need to ask a contractor in your area what those laws are....See MoreHow to renovate around the fireplace
Comments (1)Coordinate the electrician and carpenter work. When the carpenter tears open the wall and before the window get installed is when you want the electrician to do his work. If the electrician comes before, the wiring he runs could be in the way of the windows; if he comes after, it may be very difficult to run the wires. The electrician will appreciate having an open wall to work with. You also need to try to figure out what is in those walls already: there could be plumbing, electrical, and/or air ducts in there, and any one of those will complicate the job of installing windows. I'm also going to mention that the location of the tv so high up on the wall is terrible ergonomically. While many people locate a tv over the fireplace because it seems logical, you ideally want your tv to be at a height where the middle of the screen is at eye level when you are seated, rather then having to crane your neck up. If you must have the tv on that wall, at least get an articulating, fireplace tv mount so that you can lower the height to a better location when you are watching it. Something like this style: Fireplace tv mount...See MoreRelated Professionals
