I need help on a kitchen plan.

I am replacing my oak cabinets but I am running into road blocks. My kitchen has a sloped ceiling which presents some challenges. On the refrigerator wall I am removing the desk and shelves in favor of a large pantry. On the other side of the fridge is a smaller pantry I hoped to utilize as a broom closet. I think it is a better use of space but it is not balanced with that opposite wall. Is this a poor design plan? Ideas?

?balanced with opposite wall? low relevance . skip it. but the utility items I would place on the left side of fridge/ then fridge then 18 or 21 in pantry with roll outs [single door]

you have about 8 feet across.....I think Id skooch the stove to the left a bit and to the right of stove install a peninsula extending a few feet into the span across your kitchen. stools would be optional . but this would be the equivalent of the two carts you are striking out of the kitchen.......added bonus. is drawer storage on kitchen side. Use your space better.

there are many skinny utility options for next to fridge...taking advantage of the depth.

Hi, Nicely done. Couple of questions/suggestions. The sink/stove wall: Are you right or left handed? Typically, if you are right handed, the DW would be right of the sink. That would free up the doorway and make it easier to (un)load. I'm not sure you will like having the shelf over the sink, at least not the lowest one. I'm guessing that the reason the sink is not under the window is to preserve the counter length left of the stove, which is smart but I wonder if you switch the narrow base cabinet to the R of stove (so now there are 2), it would move the stove over L, giving you room to mimic the shelving R of the hood for oils n such. MIght be more functional. Ref wall: Love that expanse of counter but what is it for? Too far away for prep, so is it for buffet service? If so, then I would furr the base cabinets out 2 or 3" and that would get you a deeper countertop which might be more useful for small appliance, etc. plus service (you have the footage). I'm torn with the Ref placement. Part of me gets why it's there - closer to the cooking action. But if you pushed it all the way over to the L, you'd get to use that counter for more food prep and guests in the adjacent room could help themselves to beverages w/out getting in the way. Either way, I think you will get more function from the layout if you remove the bookcase and keep that space free (it's a little tight). You have room to place two bookshelves either on the inside of the entry (flanking passage way) or the short wall R of windows and on the opposite as well. Look forward to seeing your next revision.

You need to include all the necessary parts to get the total price. - mounting track, wiring compartment, possible jumper wires.

Hi David, I was hoping you are around to respond. Very glad you are here to help. Thanks for the links for led tape lights and suggestion for the switch. Thanks for led recessed lighting guide posted on this forum! If I use Home Depot ecosmart ( ie hd Cree) 4", with 3 pendants over the island and under cabinets lights, would 9 recessed lights be enough? I don't like dark place, as you can tell, I have 2 skylights above each side of the island in the kitchen, 1 skylight above my desk. Do you think a recessed light above my desk is a good idea? Do i need it to be very close to the wall so no shadow will be created at night? how close is the idea distance? Should I just use lamp, without a light over my head? Since you mentioned about low voltage light, the sales person suggested use low voltage halogen light can and trim set with led light bulb in the other rooms except kitchen, this way would be a lot cheaper. Is it true? Could this way be cheaper than Home Depot Cree?

gooster: thank you so much for taking an interest in my kitchen. i saw my GC today and asked about this. the problem is i live in earthquake country and the wall is not only load bearing, it's what's known as a shear wall. as i understand it, shear walls stop the house from doing the hoola hoop dance, which usually leads to an "all fall down" during an earthquake. My GC explained in detail what sort of reinforcement would have to be done to make up for the loss of the shear wall. there would be so much vertical support needed, going down thru the garage and deep into the ground, that i'd loose the use of my garage (under the kitchen) and have so many columns it'd look like ancient Rome. that being said, i love the idea of switching it around. i've also wanted to explore the status of that wall separating the ex-dining room from the laundry area. ooh, maybe i can move the laundry area to the original kitchen... thanks for thinking outside the box. it's just what i need. & we have sunshine for the 1st time in a week. Sure thing. It is 12ft wide and 18 long. The end of the stove wall has a 6 ft slider. The refrigerator wall has an access peto the dining room. The wall slopes up on the refrigerator wall.

Handed-ness is irrelevant when it comes to DW placement. It doesn't matter - you adapt no matter which side the DW is on and no matter if you're right or left handed. It's all about actual Kitchen workflow and function. (Besides, if one person is right-handed and one is left-handed and both use the sink, which are you going to satisfy?)

In all except the tiniest of Kitchens, the DW should not be b/w the sink and range, so the DW should be on the non-range side of the sink.

You have it correct in your layout - the left side of the sink.

In an ideal layout, the DW also would not be b/w the refrigerator and sink or refrigerator and range. However, if you have to pick one, I'd pick what you show.

Kitchen Workflow follows the "Ice.Water.Stone.Fire" flow (see https://www.houzz.com/discussions/2699918/looking-for-layout-help-memorize-this-first) or

Refrigerator (Ice) > Sink (Water) > Prep Counterspace (Stone) > Range (Fire).

Is this your only table space or do you have a separate Dining Room? Do you have a sketch of the entire layout of the floor the Kitchen is on with rooms labeled?

- Tell us about you and your family and how you plan to use your Kitchen. All-adults? Empty Nesters? Children (now or in the future)?
- What appliances (& their sizes) do you plan to have?
- Where are you flexible? Can walls/windows/doors/doorways change (move, change size, add, delete)?
- Do you have a basement under the Kitchen or are you on a slab?

I am left handed. We have had that footprint for many years. I suits me due to where I put away dishes and glassware. I will come up with the pic of our dining space. on the stove wall I have 47 inches of wall and 76 for a sliding door. The unseen wall is a knee wall with rail. The refrigerator wall leads to dining room.

I am wondering if you are using the entire wall with the sliding door. I would move the stove farther to the right and have larger drawers for pots and pan. Or move it a little and have larger drawers on the right end for pots.

I might move the refrigerator closer to the table and put in a pantry that opens from the side and is only 18 inches deep. (easier to reach items)

I know you want more pantry space, but I like having an open counter next to the fridge to place anything I want to load into the fridge or take out. You could still gain a lot of storage with the drawers and wall cabinets above.
