It's going to be gray from ceiling to floor? Will the company paint the walls off white instead of gray if you ask?

The company needs to ensure the previous occupant's stuff is completely gone. The file cabinets, desks, cabinets, and shelves should be emptied before your first day.

So the carpet and countertops will be a very dark gray, the walls a super light gray, almost white. And yes, the person's private items will be gone. She is retiring. I will need to keep the folders etc, since I am taking over for her. But I can switch to black folder etc. I just can't really switch out the cabinets and furniture.

when you say almost white, why not a white with a hint of color... like blue

Choose a white with a blue undertone (Behr Day Spa) comes to mind. Gray is gray, and especially with no natural light.

I understand the black accents, but why not a deep rich color.

I would do something to the metal filing cabinets in your office. If you do a search, you will find many examples of ways people have updated older metal filing cabinets in order to make them look more stylish.

Many people have simply painted them in order to unify the color of the cabinets - while others have used it as an opportunity to add a pop of color to their office (or home office/study - or use when repurposing them to use in a different room).

You need to make sure that you clean them well + use the right type of primer in order for the paint to properly adhere to the metal surface.

Real printer's drawers/cabinets are expensive (and have been popular) - many people have made faux looking ones with various types of chests, dressers, or even wider filing cabinets (like yours are):

I don't know how much work you want to put into your new office - but you could also paint or use gel stain to change the way the wood cabinets/shelves look.

You could also do something to your desk in order to make your office look more stylish (and less like an older government employee's office). Initially, I thought your desk was metal also (it looked kind like metal in the second photo) - but it appears to be some kind of veneered particle board or maybe mdf. You could easily update your desk also by adding some paint - or if you paint the oak cabinets/shelving, you could leave the desk "as is."

FYI - the oak cabinets/drawers/shelving looks like they were originally kitchen cabinets (and the "shelving" looks like regular upper wall cabinet boxes that have simply had the doors removed because the binders were too wide to fit within the cabinets if the doors remained).

I love the black filing cabinets. I will have to ask if I am allowed to paint. They are fireproof and extremely heavy, so I might not be able to move them
