Newbie needs advice: finishing oak exterior door
Comments (6)Don't try to stain it in place ... have it cut to fit and the hinges routed and holes drilled, lay it flat on some sawhorses and do each side. Then install it. It's way easier to get an even coat, avoids runs in the finish, etc. That usually means waiting until late spring, and does mean you take down the old door, re-install the old door and take it down again when the replacement is ready. But it's sooooo much easier, Use as many coats of a penetrating oil stain as it takes, or let it stay on longer before wiping for a deeper color. Don't pay attention to the names of the stains, look at the color samples. Beware of "Red mahogany"! It's REALLY RED. It's useful for boosting the red tones in a stain that is not red ehough, but way too red to use by itself....See MoreFinishing an oak desktop (new wood) and have a question or two?!?
Comments (2)The only clash would be if you changed varieties of poly---water based to oil/oil to water. I quit using tack cloths years ago---blue paper towels dampened with solvent(for the finish being used) works much better, in my experience. I also get better results with poly when using a Purdy(my favorite) or other good man made bristle brush. The china bristle is best for oil based finishes, while the man made is better with water based finishes. But, for me, the man made gives better results with both. But, with the man made brush, I find wiping any excess off the brush on the can/container causes air bubbles---brushing an area more than three strokes also causes bubbles....See MoreWalnut Island top used as cutting board - photos & finish details
Comments (60)len, you’re welcome. You won’t regret it. I hope you intend to cut right on the island, not just have a beautiful wooden island that you’re paranoid about getting marked up. We passed the 10 year anniversary this past June and while I’ve toyed with sanding it down a bit as mentioned above, I think we’re going to give it a few more years. Of course a few weeks after we hit 10 years we got a really bad stain from where I left the metal disc from a food mill sitting on the counter overnight. I don’t understand why a wet piece of metal leaves a dark black stain in the wood. There’s some sort of reaction between the wood and the metal when it’s wet. It’s not a rust stain. The marks are black. I’m sure it will sand out if I bother but… who cares? It’s a kitchen, not a museum....See MoreWood Island Top Choices...advice appreciated!

If you want to chop directly on it, the end grain, as shown in Francoise47's 1st photo allows the knife blade to go down between, or parallel with the grain, so there is less damage, and less change in the appearance. Edge grain or flat, with the grain running sideways on the surface, will be cut by the knife, so is more likely to show the cut and later, possibly have little pieces come loose, making it less smooth and more beat-up looking. Edge grain is supposed to do have less problem than flat, because the exposed grain is tighter/thinner. Flat is perfectly OK if you're not going to cut on the surface. Flat boards could possibly cup, which isn't a concern with the other 2 styles, but made well, this shouldn't be a problem with the flat boards, either. Other than that, the looks can be quite different, and that's where personal preference comes in. These all make a difference in the price, because of the amount of work and material involved. The person making this for you should've discussed which wood, which grain direction, and thickness before quoting a price....See MoreRelated Professionals
