Positioning of modular honeycomb blinds

Hi,

I’m wanting to install a honeycomb modular blackout blind over two French doors. The blind is about 6 - 7 cm.

What position would you put the blind in? Have it stick out 1-2 cm or have it sit flush with the door jam but have a gap (see purple)?

For french doors I would personally put them on the wall above the doors so the doors can be fully accessible when the blinds are raised. Into the purple area is fine if the stack of the blinds is minimal and will not interfere with going through the doors when they are open.

Another option for doors is Hunter Douglas Vertiglide shades. They are vertical and open to the side. You can have them open to one side or split. You can probably order them in brown to blend into your stained wood trim.

They are only three months old so look new. Absolutely no problems and the quality is very good. They operate very smoothly. I did custom order through Penney's. I first did my internet research and had several quotes online. The sales rep was able to beat all my quotes. It was nice to able to see the various blinds in person, then I brought home the sample books to match color. That proved difficult with the tiny samples but I wanted neutral and am happy with the results. You have the choice of separate head rails like I did, or a single head rail. They are easy to clean though I have not needed to yet. I haven't decided if I will put my drapes back up as I'm enjoying the clean look right now. Mine are 3/8" double cell, 40"x72". Each blind was $268 +tax. The top-down/bottom-up function does increase the price but I feel it was worth it for my application. Here is a link that might be useful: Cleaning Instructions

Are honeycomb shades durable with kids?

I don't know what BBB are carrying but the ones I own are very durable. I believe they're by Hunter Douglas. One set is behind the kitchen sink and I've washed spaghetti sauce off with no problems plus when they've gotten crushed from the cat lying against them they pop right back into position. I highly recommend their UltraGlide cord system. Personally, I wouldn't want to go around everyday raising and lowering 12' of cordless roman shades. Keep in mind that when the cellulars are down you have total privacy but no control of light as you do with blinds.

If I read correctly, your window faces west. Have you considered cellular shades? The honeycomb construction gives you lightweight construction but excellent dead air space. Three separate shades, inside mount, would further control dead air space. You can choose between light blocking and semi opaque/ light filtering. I have them in pairs of windows. Never second guessed separate shades in separate windows.

Just like everything, there are different levels of quality for cellular shades. I installed them on a large south-facing window because even though the window does have a film to cut back the UV, in the late morning and afternoon there is a lot of light from the south. I went to a retailer that offered various levels of sheerness. I chose something fairly sheer, but not the most sheer. Because the window is in our living room it doesn't really matter if you can see shadows through them at night. The effect is perfect - I am so happy I chose them. Mine are white with a little texture. They're attractive and do what I want them to do. They don't look cheap at all. I use Blinds to Go which is a retailer on the East Coast and in Eastern Canada.

I think you meant to say "cellular" blinds, instead of "modular" . These blinds have cells, or pockets that trap air and provide some defense against both heat and cold, thus they are cellular in form.

I have them and I love them!

I think I would mount to each door so there's no obstacle above. There are many versions of black-out shades and roller shades to consider for this. Also, window film might be something to consider.

Our bottom-up top-down shades are only 1 inch in overall depth and do install to a shallow depth of only 1/2 inch. Install them close to your glass so you have a full inside mount and clean installation.
