Hurricane wind exterior shades?

Our front porch on a farmhouse gets very strong winds up to 60mph. I would love to be able to pull down an exterior shade along the side that creates a type of wind tunnel on a track. I’ve heard of them but not sure where to find them. Thank you for helping me!

I looked at some but the max wind was 50 MPH Maybe build some type of motorized vanes that are permanent might do the trick . If you post some pics of the house and the area we might be able to come up with so othr solution . I live in Canada we have areas where wind is a huge issue but most places plant trees to buffer the wind .Shutters on windows not quite the same as what the op needs but maybe that cpmapny has a solution .

Also it is my understanding when you cut the top of a tree, rot will develop at the cut and slowly destroy the tree. If you think it must go take it out, It you want to give it a chance give it a chance, BUT don't cut of the top. If you want to take it out go down to the rental agency and get an appropriate size chain saw. Since it is a pine, cut the branches on the opposite side from the direction you want the tree to fall and cut it down using the proper techniques. Around here you can rent a chipper for about $175/day, and a chain saw for about $50. Cut the trunk in to 14 to 20 foot lengths and split them so they can be added to the chipper. You will then have accomplished two thing, gotten rid of the tree and gained some good mulch for around your yard. Lastly BE CAREFULL. Learn about the chain saw, and think through every cut be for you even start the saw. Besides it is fun cutting down the tree then feeding the branches into the chipper.

We're having 6 of our 9 pines taken down tomorrow. Two were recently struck by lightning and the others need to come down to make way for construction of a garden shed. I won't be sorry to see any of them go. The needles are great for mulch and they do provide a measure of shade in the yard, but watching them sway with each bad storm hasn't gotten really old. I'm looking forward to transplanting my own choice of trees. Already purchased a Dawn Redwood (like Bald Cypress, but without the knees), Chalk Maple, Winged Elm, and a Silverbell. May buy a River Birch and something else before all is said and done.

hey grits - so... even if there is a lot of house behind the front elevation.....so what? you can't see it when you look at the home from the curb so just focus on improving the curb appeal from the front elevation. I think it would be cool to either paint (with a strong accent color like orange as shown in the waldrum residence) or cover the 2nd story peak with a color or galvanized steel that would continue to the first story as a vertical element. That would help break up the strong horizontal lines which currently exist. I think you are on the right track to go edgy and contemporary with your beach home!

We had a strong storm come through yesterday with whirling winds and very heavy rain as well as some hail. It knocked down or damaged free standing trees throughout the neighborhood including a southern magnolia two houses down from mine. I had no damage in my yard because the canopies of all the trees in my yard grow together. They help support each other during windy conditions. I think the different leaf shapes and growth habits also help break up the wind better. I have a white bird of paradise that is huge! It's like 20' tall. It would have never made it to that hight except it's supported by the branches of a camphor tree, a fishtail palm sits on one side of it and some yew on the otherside . In front of all that along the street are crepe myrtles, oaks and a wild tamarind. During Irma many trees were toppled in my neighborhood yet my super tall flimsy looking bird of paradise made it through just fine. Even my brittle Bolivian tree sunflowers stood standing.

Search for "Storm catcher hurricane screens"

We have them in our house in FL. It allows us to leave our outdoor furniture, decorative pots and plants in our lanai area during a hurricane. Lots of companies that sell, install and maintain them in FL, but not sure how easy it will be to find dealers/installers in other states.

@J Steel sure! One is called Denver Pergolas. The other I must have gotten rid of my internet tab that was open but I know there were two companies at least. The other company had a store in Highlands Ranch and maybe Boulder as well? I think I googled hurricane screen Colorado or something. Seems to be popular here due to the winds we get.
