help with turning odd room into music room

last month
last modified: last month

Thanks in advance for ideas and support! We have just moved into a house. I am not good with design and decor, and my husband is even worse. There is a room at the front of the house that connects to a guest bedroom/hall ways that leads to laundry room and kitchen on one side (in picture, this is the side with a base), and to entrance to kitchen/foyer on the other. The large glass window is NOT a sliding glass door. It is a window. I currently have no furniture for it, and have it set up with a rug that my husband wants to use here (I am going to try to dissuade him), an ottoman that I have turned into a mock loveseat with some cushions -- this is to get a feel for where a loveseat might go -- and a couple of chairs. The idea for this music room is that we would sometimes be practicing here -- keyboard or bass -- and sometimes we would have folks over -- sometimes as many as 10-12 for a jam. We also have a guitar and banjo that we will either hang up or put in stands somewhere. I also have a mountain dulcimer. It is leaning up against the wall and hard to see what it is, but may hang that as well. Since we will be hosting jams, the room can't be filled with large heavy pieces of furniture. We need to easily be able to add chairs to create a circle for jamming. My husband wants to have a round wooden table somewhere that we could pull out into the middle. There is no overhead light, so I will have to use lamps for lighting. Any suggestions as to furniture layout (couch/bench with no chairs, with two chairs, with one chair, what tables and where, what kind of seating if I have to use this rug, lamps, other accent tables, etc, best place to hang or place instruments) would be hugely appreciated. Also, if I used some different pillows, is the ottoman with pillows too horrible just while I am searching for something else? Is it better to just have an empty room, or place chairs there, while I am searching for furniture? Thanks again!
