Countertops with rounded waterfall

So virtually every quartz waterfall I see is very modern: mitered edge, sharp looking corners. Looks good but it would stand out like a sore thumb in my house. I do like the waterfall idea, though, and if I could round it out, I think it might be very cool.

Consider this wooden cabinet:

The edge looks continuous, but it's curved. Obviously quartz isn't wood and can't be bent, but the softer look is nice.

Now consider this curved stone (from this Facebook video):

Still a sharp edge where the tranistion happens, but we've got some curves here.

I'm imagining a radiused corner and an arch, almost, instead of a straight-down fall.

Is this possible? If possible, is it insanely stupid, or just highly idiosyncratic?

Leaning towards "no waterfall" but the curves and arches are intriguing to me

Can you show us your space first? Insanely stupid and highly idosyncratic are not just in the eye of the beholder, but in the space of the beholder too. Everything in context. Most spaces are not right for waterfall to begin with. But, I do appreciate that you have vision beyond the cookie cutter.

I could, but it's a bit of a mess right now - I'm also knocking out a wall, so the layout will be very different. This is my IKEA kitchen design, the house is a 1964 ranch.

The short ends don't need to be mitered, in fact a butt joint with a demi bullnose profile all the way around will look better than a miter because the joint is lower and further from the eye. This is also easier to fabricate and install and is therefore less expensive. And much less delicate to transport. I'd profile the top, rabbet the bottom of the top on the CNC slightly, install it, butt the CNC dressed ends and done.

Hi Nileen, As a Kitchen Designer I would say check with your Cambria supplier on this design, countertops can be very tricky. Some countertop designs just don't work the way people think, the curve may not work well with the waterfall. You are spending a lot of money, Cambria isn't cheap, so be sure that your countertop will be sound. Your supplier/fabricator should know, generally if a design won't work they let you know and discuss your options. It looks as though you will have seating there, if so the curve may have an impact on that. If I were you and your supplier okays it then I would go for a more subtle curve or an inverted curve (curving outward instead). You also need to think about your budget as this will add an extra cost (the curve) for fabricating your countertop. I hope this was helpful

GC agrees and is fantastic - I use them on every project. My post was to get some objective viewpoints because after looking at it for a week straight, I've lost perspective on the two options. Faced with an option to just "accept it and move on" as live_wire stated is appealing on one hand because we are several weeks behind schedule (COVID supply chain issues) and without even basic use of the kitchen for 10 weeks now - so the thought of just plowing forward and getting this done is enticing. However, we did pay a premium for an upgraded feature from a reputable and experienced fabricator...having to look at something that is "a solid B" when that isn't what we paid for nor were promised, and doesn't match the quality of the rest of the project will probably irk me to see each time we walk into the kitchen. Again, was looking for some perspective on if this is acceptable or poor from professionals or people with more experience with mitered edges than myself. The chastizing over the inherent pitfalls of renovation and "overdone fad features" really is just white noise - this isn't my first or even 10th reno, but I'm also not a stone fabricator. But then again, who doesn't enjoy armchair quarterbacking other peoples' projects from behind a keyboard? 🙂

Neolith countertops/kitchen waterfall a mistake??

I have polished neolith countertops in small apt kitchen with waterfall on island. Installed a year ago and love it. There are micro scratches that show in the polished but nothing anyone notices, you have to be looking for it. Polished reflects the light so my kitchen looks bright. Ihave had no issues. Good installation is key so you must work with a fabricator that knows the product and is properly trained

NO honestly think about hao awful that curve would be for function stuff sliding off and just NO Waterfall couners belong in very contemporry kitchens ideally with nothing in them either . A nice bullnow edge in a more traditional kitchen is the way to go. There are many ways to design a kitchen that is fuctional and beautiful this ide is not one of them

I love your thinking but we have no idea if it’s appropriate for your kitchen and it will cost several times more than a standard install. Stone comes in flat sheets and does not bend. Which means lots of building up and manually cutting away. The cost will be astronomical if you even live in an area with a shop willing to take it on. Formed corian will be more economical but still very expensive. Capitol C custom.

Since it's 33% resin, engineered stone certainly can be thermoformed. It isn't cheap which is why it's almost always confined to commercial applications.

Thanks everyone for the input! Johnny Grey's kitchen designs are phenomenally cool. I take it the fancy here is much more expensive than I was anticipating, so I'll probably skip the waterfall entirely.
