Comments (16)While an early advocate of "shutters that fit", I'm coming around to a new opinion that, if the shutters aren't placed or even hinged so that they could possibly close and cover the window, they are a decorative feature enhancing the windows that should just be scaled and colored pleasingly. Bev's shutters above look way too big, like each ONE could cover the window. I didn't measure, that's just how they look. The other issue with shutter is, is they are the louvered-look, technically the louvers should be open at the top. Why? So that if they were closed, the rain would run down the louvers. The problem is that (almost) no one (in North America) closes their shutters, so if you have the louvers open at the top the water runs down behind them and rot the wood. That's why most shutters that are decorative are hung "upside down". So, if they are going to be "upside down" anyway, and hinge-free, which is technically incorrect, then go for whatever looks good. In the back yard, can your DD start a new neighborhood trend and bury the power lines? It would look much nicer....See MoreDo you have any advice to give this exterior more curb appeal?
Comments (20)Thank you all so much. I appreciate the input. Celerygirl, seeing the colors imposed on the house is amazing. I like them all. Probably favor the top one. Can I bother you for the paint name? Love the door, would never have picked something like that! Houssaon, The belly board is the the strip that separates the bottom brick from the upper siding? It really does make a difference in the sample house you posted. It would run from the left side of the house, over the garage doors, little porch area, over the first floors windows and then ends at the right side of the house? I really like that idea. Thank yo so much. Ohio, Thank yo for you recommendation. Is there room for taller windows, which I far prefer, and if so, would you install windows with or without mullion? K Laurence and Decoenthusiast, I agree, however, we listed our house, expecting it to sit a while and it sold in 2 days. Our rental has fallen through and our timeframe for remaining in the area lengthened longer than anticipated. We have a trusted contractor who can supposedly do it all in 2 months (fingers crossed!!!!). If this falls through, we have no where to go :( Thank you all so much!! p.s. what do you think about the little porch area? can anything be done to enhance/change the railing....See MoreHow to make this have more curb appeal?

Comments (8)I understand painting the entire area the same color - but that brown is too dark and foreboding to me. I would go with all white-ish (actually closer to a cream color or color in your roof shingles to unify the look) including the garage door. Paint the balcony railing black so it disappears. Keep your front door an accent color so that visually it is the focal point. Don't enhance the garage door by painting it a different color than the siding color you select. Trim (limb up) the tree using a pro arborist. That is a real issue having the tree so close to your home where the branches encroach on your roof and overtake your front door area. Your entry and walkway area need to be cleaned up and landscaped with fresh plantings too. Add your color in a pot or three or in flowers. You have a nice place, but painting it dark like that will push away a large pool of buyers....See MoreRelated Professionals
