Milk gets sour in our new GE Monogram Refrigerator
Comments (10)In my old Maytag fridge there were rather large temperature swings which caused foods to simultaneously freeze (in the back of the shelves) and spoil (in the doors). I had to be very careful where I kept things. Meats and dairy had to be in the back of the fridge, while produce had to be stuffed in the door. I kept two instant-read thermometers in the fridge at all times, one in the door and one on the shelf. There was a 7-8 degree difference between the two. There were also large swings in the temperature due to the weather. On a hot day, I had to remember to crank up the compressor or the fridge would read 45 degrees. During a cold snap, everything in the fridge would freeze. In my new KitchenAid fridge, there is less than a 2 degree temperature difference between the door and the shelves. And it doesn't care about the weather. I keep it set at 37 and it holds very well. I would think your new Monogram should do the same. Food is supposed to be refrigerated at less than 40 degrees, so if you want to keep your milk in the door, you may want to stick a thermometer in there to keep tabs on the temps....See MoreNeed to get a new refrigerator and getting ready to sell
Comments (11)Thank you all for your input. After I thought about it, all of the appliances are actually 12 years old, not 13, given when they were installed and it's the beginning of the year, not the end. It doesn't really matter though. In response to some of the comments: Yes, we had a repair person out yesterday. We were fully prepared to repair it. He indicated it was a leak. After doing some research, and based upon what he said, repairing a leak is hit or miss. It could leak again in a few months. I live in a kind of odd area with a lot of variation in what kinds of houses one finds in the upper end of the market. Having worked as a real estate agent for over 8 years here I have a good grasp of the market and the competition. I've been in 100's of houses in all price ranges. I no longer work as an agent, but have kept current on what is sold and what is available. I've worked with upper end buyers. Some of the value of our house comes from the 17 acres of wooded property. Having been an agent, and having had several appraisals on this house, we are pretty realistic as to how much value that adds. Much of the value comes from the size and construction. Few of the newer houses in this price range are all brick as ours is or contain have as many baths, etc. Ours is of a similar size to the other homes in this price range with and without the property. Craigslist appliances are generally few and far between and overpriced here. My community is pretty mobile and there is a large market for used goods. People assume that the students moving in and out every few years are willing and able to pay a premium price for used items. I saw a 20 year old Whirlpool fridge for sale yesterday for $400. I have a slightly newer and better fridge in my basement. If I wanted to go that route I would move it upstairs, but I think that would be worse. I've measured the opening multiple times so I know what size fridge I need to purchase. It's not a Subzero or similar fridge so that does make it a bit more standard. As for taking the fridge: it's about 50-50. Some leave it, some don't. If the original had not broken, I would have left it. I will leave all other appliances including the washer/dryer. Thank you all for your input. I'll search out a white fridge that fits in the space. The worst case it that it becomes our second fridge in the future, and I become one of those people selling my 20 year old fridge for $400. :)...See MoreI finally get a new refrigerator--but what color? Comments (14)I'd go with fingerprint resistant stainless and update your backsplash with something other than the copper tiles. I think it comes down to whether you're ready for a change from black to stainless. If you're ready for a change then you might as well start now with the refrigerator and then replace the other appliances over time when they break down or as your budget allows. I also think black appliances would make your small kitchen feel even smaller, so that's another reason to change over to fingerprint resistant stainless steel appliances....See MoreLooking for recommendations for a new 48" built in refrigerator.
Comments (13)FWIW, our SZ built-in can be pulled out by DH (and has been) who is in his 60's. It's on wheels, and if on hardwood I recommend placing RamBoard in front as it's heavy and will cause denting in wood flooring. Also, the compressors are at the top and within easy reach - which also means easier to clean for me (I hated attempting to pull our old standard depth out to vacuum and clean). Yes, they are more expensive than standard depth, and the integrated are even more than the built-ins for the most part. At 48" though, I do think built-ins hold quite a bit. Our old side by side standard depth was 35", and by going with the SZ side by side 48" I gained 3.4 cubic feet in the fridge. No gain in the freezer side. If one is limited in width, I'd go with a standard depth because fridge space is important to us....See MoreRelated Professionals
