need wall cap for pro range hood

Spent some time looking into this but it’s so mixed without a clear guidance. What does everyone recommend for an external wall cap in the northeast to vent out a pro range hood pushing 800cfm? Needs to be 10”

I’ve looked at luxury metals, famco and broan (louvre design) but am having a hard time deciding on both look and function. Any suggestions really appreciated.

Go to a HVAC supply house. This isn't found on vent hood site, and it isn't brand specific.

Gee, that's a new issue to worry about. My hood, DCS Eurohood, has the controls underneath but on the right edge - I've never noticed them getting greasy or sticky. On the other hand, the outside front of my hood does get a little greasy because the hood isn't deep enough to cover the front burners completely. I think in my case I'd have more of an issue if the controls were outside on the front.

You can always turn down the heat you use. Assuming you are considering the eventual buyer of your place, the average schmoe will be impressed with a pro-style range and won't think twice about exhaust. Do you have "any" access to external venting? Reason I ask is that a friend who bought a unit in the JPM building across from the NYSE was given a strange setup where a chimney style hood vented into the "capture area" above the entire galley kitchen which then vented into the building's standard exhaust system. Yes, it's questionable, no, I have not experienced the practicality of it (do successful Wall St bachelors really cook?) but apparently it looked attractive to (or, more likely, was overlooked by) a buyer of a $2MM apt.

First, a warning -- I have never lived in a house that needed make-up air. Not even close. Double-pane glass makes little sense for us since all the heat goes around the sashes in our Victorian. My experience with MUA is related to commercial systems. What follows is an opinion about the kinds of things that would make me consider MUA. Unless you have a Code requirement for make-up air, you have a fireplace you use when cooking (I seem to remember that you are South Bay?), have a "naturally" vented gas appliance in "connected space" (no always-closed doors between the hood and the appliance), or have a "tight" house (recent, energy-efficient construction, most likely), I would skip MUA. Even if you do need MUA, the difference in the maximum hood flow probably wouldn't significantly influence the the cost of the MUA system, which I would think was primarily labor driven. If not significantly more expensive, and you can run at least an 8" duct (preferably a 10"), I'd go with 900 CFM for two reasons: * You have it when you need it -- guests over, and the kitchen fills with smoke... * A 900 CFM blower at 600 CFM may be noticeably quieter than a 600 CFM blower at 600 CFM The 24" will serve you well. We used a Tornado II by Zephyr. It's an insert that we built a hood around to fit my situation. I saved quite a bit of money by buying my insert directly from an ebay dealer that I bought almost all of my appliances from. (saving-u-money) is his eBay handle. I can provide more info if you want to compare prices. Here's a photo of my hood. Though not completed, you can see how a liner works. You can also download a PDF info from Zephyr that will give you a drawing, schematic, and other info that will show you exactly what you will need to do this. I love my hood. The photo online shows that they've redesigned it a bit. Mine actually looks like the Tornado III, but I know it was a II with 1,000 CFM. FWIW, I love my hood. It's a powerhouse and doesn't blow you out of the water. It's a solid whooshing sound, not whiney and tinney. My brother lives next door about 300' away. (We both have 1.5 acres.) He has called me before to ask, "When's dinner?" because he can smell what I'm cooking. My kitchen vent is away from his house, too. When I've told him that I'm not grilling and I'm cooking inside and not outside, he can't believe it. It has to be this powerful hood. Here is a link that might be useful: Tornado II

This is HVAC. Go to a HVAC supply house. Why insist on overpaying, and over complicating? Your GC should know of all the local supply houses. Or, at least his sub should.

Valid point, need to find one. GC made it seem like I need to source so haven’t looked into local thinking maybe it’s an issue.

How about his RDP Hooded Wall Vent with Screen and Damper? Owners seem to like it and it has a damper and screen.

Also, if the wall cap is more than a couple of feet from the hood (which itself should have a damper), a damper should be used close to the wall cap.

It’s a very short run - just about a 10”-15” rise to an elbow and out the back wall. In either case I intend on getting the cap with its own damper on the outside just for the extra piece of mind. Called a local hvac house and they seem to have something in stock so will run over and see what they’ve got.

@kaseki - I’ve not been on this board for long and only started browsing now with the project but are you an engineer or an hvac specialist because I see you have a wealth of knowledge on the topic and quite the authority following. Just curious as I find individuals like your self very few and far between which is challenging when trying to get answers. Everyone’s got the “I’ve done it a million times”.

That RDP cap is a knock off from famco and is the exact one I was looking at. They don’t have many specs but I imagine with a wide mouth like that in a 10” diameter it should be well positioned for the output of the vent.

I are an engineer (except perhaps to the National Society of Professional Engineers). My educational field was electrical, not HVAC, but basic engineering principles can operate across fields. I had to learn this stuff for my own kitchen renovation (ca. 2008 - 2012). I was "triggered" by a Vent-a-Hood salesman's spiel. One may need a thick skin (introversion) to hang around for a long time.

For the big picture, it can be helpful to review commercial literature. This is the best I've seen. The first dozen of so pages should be sufficient:
