What New Plants Have you Bought this Season?
Comments (12)I haven't bought too many this month but I went nuts in Feb and March. 14 new ones in Feb alone. But as far as April and May goes, I've been getting really into cacti and a few succulents. Rhipsalidopsis gaertneri (Easter Cactus) - From Wal-Mart in pretty bad condition, and it wasn't even marked down, but I felt so bad for it that I bought it anyways. It now looks great and won't stop growing! Not that I want it to stop. Dahlia (Stargazer) - Just a seed I planted...one of the few that actually has survived. Agave of some sort - Still haven't been able to get an ID on this one. Frustrating, but I'll forgive it 'cause it's a neat looking plant. Echinocereus enneacanthus - I call it my Killer Cactus. Hehe. Stetsonia coryne (Toothpick Cactus) - This one's a killer cactus too, but the name was taken by above cactus. Hildewinteria aureispina (Golden Rat Tail) - I saw a larger version of this plant that I really liked, but I love to buy small and watch them grow really big by my hand so I found just a little one. Aloe striata (Coral Aloe) - Everyone pray for me. I have no luck with aloes, but I thought it was so neat I had to have it, and like Crotons I thought that if I tried enough times I'd get the hang of them. Codiaeum variegatum (Mammy) - I was telling myself no more plants for a while, but this one was half price at Superstore. What can I say...the addiction kicked in. And citosa, I'm totally jealous of you. I want an Adenium obesum so bad. I looked on Ebay for some seeds and I found a ton, but I just don't trust anyone over the internet....See MoreBasista- have you bought anything for your new home from them?
Comments (2)Earlier this year I bought two dressers from them. I had seen the dressers in a store while travelling, and when I got home I searched for a retailer for the furniture, and found Basista. My experience was excellent. Ordering from them was easy, as was setting up the delivery date. The furniture arrived exactly when they said it was, and it arrived in perfect shape....See MoreYour Kitchen Vision - Hit or Miss?
Comments (33)There have been requests for photos and so far, not too many, so I'll throw mine in. Vision points... What I was 'after': - Functional goals: Room for our whole family of 10 to hang out and work together without getting in each other's way...Work Zones and multiple work spaces. A separate room so kitchen mess, noise, etc. is confined and not experienced from other rooms. - A 'baker's kitchen'. One that looks like you should smell bread baking in the oven and see pies cooling on the counter. This is what I fell in love with in looking at white kitchens, while all the time knowing white kitchens weren't for me. I had to figure out what else it was that was drawing me. - One my kids would think was cool and my grandma's would've loved, too... A good mix of contemporary lines, well-performing appliances, all while feeling welcoming and homey. Barefoot appropriate. Where the kids and friends, and eventually grandkids, want to hang out and bake. - A little bit of the outside in. I wanted to be able to sit at my kitchen table and feel relaxed... Like the feeling of sitting on the sun-warmed and sun-bleached rocks along a river...with the feeling of a sunny day in the trees. (The stone behind the stove was supposed to represent the feel of those sun-bleached rocks, so that's why it was a disappointment for them to be more varied with some darker shades.) - I also needed to have a surprise of boldness and artistic flair. That's where the stronger color comes in along one side, and the variation in materials and, particularly, backsplash. Lascatx helped me be brave enough to show this side of myself in an otherwise fairly traditional, farmy type kitchen that was designed to suit our 2007 version of an American Foursquare home. You can see I asked a lot of it! LOL. And it delivers, pretty well for us. After 3 1/2 years it's still a bit of a work in progress. Island needs to be finished after I redesigned it to replace doored cabinets with drawers, need a new drawer front under the newest oven, and the upper trim needs to be done. Looking forward to seeing everyone else's 'hits.' :-D Here is a link that might be useful: More kitchen pics...See MoreFloorplan review. Have I missed anything? (2500sf 2-storey)
Comments (11)I think the downstairs the den and upstairs the laundry/bathroom are too long and narrow; in both cases, the location of the stairs is constricting the rooms. I'd say add another 2-4' to the front of the house -- a bump-out -- so these rooms can be comfortable. The back door looks fine on the plans ... but once you're trying to scootch past the table, it's going to be cramped. I'd move it to the great room, straight in front of the front door, which will give a nice sight line upon entering the house. Why 7' wide for the foyer, when the staircase is elsewhere? Speaking of the staircase, you have probably 35 sf of storage under that landing (7' wide and with a window seat, at least 5' deep). Be sure you use this; don't allow it to be closed off space. You could have recessed book cases pointing towards the office and/or a shorty door opening from the family room. It'd be good for holiday storage. And I'd open up the staircase towards either the family room OR the office. Much nicer than a dark, closed-off stair. The kitchen is a mess. You don't want your pantry interrupting the main work area of your kitchen. Plus, you don't want to enter the house through the mud room and carry groceries all the way around a wall and then through the kitchen. You want to enter the house and have grocery storage RIGHT THERE. None of the rooms downstairs could be used as a bedroom. Why go to the expense of a full bath in the mud room? Bedroom 2's close is piddly small. All three bedrooms "run together" with no sound barrier between them -- closets are great for this. The master bath and the closet are spacious, but the tub looks squished back in that recess. Ditto for what I think is a make-up area. Are you really going to sit in the bathroom? Bath 1 is odd. It'd be better if it were simply three items placed in a straight line. As it is now, you've split up the plumbing so that it will cost as much as possible. I see you have a little linen closet outside the kid's bath -- good, you can always use another linen closet -- but why not extend it farther down the hall? Or, if a closet is too deep, a bookshelf would be nice here....See MoreRelated Professionals
