I think you need to decide if the mirror is for primping, or just for a design statement. If you look at many foyer pix, including a couple here, the mirror is practically covered up by a larger floral arrangement directly in front of it. It is not about checking your lipstick. The reason I mention it is because I think the mirror needs to hang on the lower 2/3 of the wall space between the light and the tabletop - and likely that will make it a bit low for some people to use for grooming purposes. I think the box is nice, and can certainly sit in front of the mirror a bit. I think the floral piece is way too casual and rustic for the other pieces in the group, and also disappears as the color of the vase is almost identical (at least in the pix) to the color of the table. I would rather see you find an interesting pair of antique brass or black iron urns to place on either side of the mirror, and fill with taller greenery and branches to add volume on either side of the mirror. The paired urns would also add a more formal feel there. Consider adding a decorative mirror hanger and cording to give the mirror more vertical presence.

I have to agree with Yardvaark - that is an uncomfortably tight entry with those massive topiaries on either side. A person with much girth would have to move sideways to get through to the door!! And two people coming for a visit would have to move in single file........that is just against all common tenets of a "good" landscape design or a welcoming "curb appeal". While it may look "pretty", it is impractical and becomes intimidating and unwelcoming, which is just the opposite of what it should be for a front or primary entry. Now if the porch or stoop was wider or more generously sized so that it extended out on either side of the doorway a reasonable distance, that would be a different situation and they could work well. But in that photo example, that is way too much plant/accessories for such a tiny space. ETA: since it appears the OP has a roomier position to accommodate topiaries without impeding comfortable access, artificial ones may make the most sense in his/her climate as winter cold would likely make short work of any living topiaries. There are some very attractive artificial topiaries available by mail order from some of the home decor outlets......check Wayfair, Grandinroad or Ballard designs

I don't mind the table and mirror and can't really think of anything besides art that would fit on that wall. Can't see the table details well but could it be painted? How about red to match your lovely door? What would say "fresh and cozy" to you for that space? Have you thought of a new light fixture? A runner and a larger rug in the entrance could look good. I don't find the clock visible from the door to be welcoming so I'd be tempted to remove it.

Hi there, Thanks for the response. A covered porch would be lovely; however, weather conditions in St. John's make it a less attractive option. It's cold, wet, and windy most of the year, despite the misleading sunshine in the pictures below :) My tulips only just came up this week if that gives you any indication of how delayed our growing season is. We're clinging to a rock 500 miles in the Atlantic Ocean, and that's generally exactly how it feels :) People don't tend to do sunrooms an verandahs here. You can see that all the others on our street have deck-like steps. It's pretty much ubiquitous on the whole street. Also, developing the space in front of the window would cut off the only source of natural light from the living room, which I don't think would be good. It's not so much that I want an open area as that I want to change the unsightly rail and concrete. The big challenge is the ridge that runs along the stairs- it makes installing decking over top or adding a prefab rail difficult. Thanks, Rebecca
