Whale watching, Doors and Garages
Our front door in Maine is currently painted white. I plan to paint it a different color (probably whatever i choose for the back porch screen door, probably FnB Parma-Gray-which-is-really-blue).
I am open to other suggestions on door color; the house is gray cedar shake with white trim.
I would also like a nice brass knocker, but our door cannot really accommodate a knocker. This is the only pic I have of it, from the inside obviously.
So in our first ATF rental, the house across the street had a door not that different from this layout, and they had a lovely brass whale silhouette mounted below the glass. I want one. I left them a note asking nicely where they got it, they texted me they would let me know but have not. I will try to take a pic of their door (wearing fake nose and glasses) if I can.
Meantime I have been looking for one. I was sure I could find it but no luck.

Or I could ask the guy to do stripers, which is what DH catches when he surfcasts here,
This is close but I do not like this particular rendering and also it is way too big, at 38.5". I think 24" is about right.
Ideas?

The Sears Craftsman line of garage door openers. The most failure prone pieces of junk ever built. Perhaps you do not have the experience or have not seen as many Craftsman Garage door opener failures as I have. To those readers out there who wish to eliminate this headache from their lives, just replace the thing before you spend more money and time on a machine that was built with failure in mind. This type of design creates a huge replacement parts market for Sears. They can make massive profits on replacement parts with a captive market. The problem was that the previous owner had installed the attic floor on top of the wire to the opener, sandwiching it between the plywood and ceiling joists. As the wood expanded and contracted, it wore through the wire and eventually allowed the conductors to touch, causing the door to randomly open. Comments (7)Thanks for your reply. The opener has been there for long time. It is screw drive type opener. On the rail assembly, there is an inner trolley (also called rack) and outer trolley. The problem I'm having is inner trolley moves fine, but once outer trolley is engaged, it would not move, making noise, as seen 26sec into the video. Then after disengaged outer trolley, the rack/inner trolley moves back and forth smoothly. I didn't connect the door, so just try to isolate the problem from the garage door. I was near our first ATF rental today and stole a pic of the whale that I covet. It's a really charming house but I could not get a good pic because they are putting on an addition and there were all these trade vehicles there. But here it is:
I had DH take a pic of our screen door for me. I think it will make the most sense to put the whale on the screen door cross piece, which is ~5.5" high and 32" wide. The screen door will be painted and get new screens, now that it is getting so much attention. It is currently white, like the solid door it covers.
It is funny to me that even though I think I used all of the appropriate search terms to find a reasonable facsimile, the results with the image were far superior.I believe I can get all of these in the size I choose; probably about 12"? I think it will look so pretty!

Okay, I ordered my whale. So excited!
He is gilded with gold leaf; the sculptor tells me the gold leafing holds up very well to the elements (ours will be covered by the verandah, but the salt air is killer for 90% of materials).https://www.lineandberry.com/misc-carvings

Oh Ded, he is lovely. I have no idea what one should cost, and I might want to wait until we have a building or at least a permit, LOL. OTOH I have friends and relatives that live not that far from the seller, in Bucks County.
We prob won't start construction until Fall ... too much going on now, and then during summer we won't want a construction site.
A few years ago we snapped this photo of a garage we liked in Cohasset.
It is oddly tall and we are anti-cupola, so we created this version:
However, we will also want room for a golf cart so it will have to be wider overall. Logistically the extra width should be all to one side, but I think it will look better evenly distributed. I'd guess this is about 22' and we are going to do 30'. - last monthlast modified: last month
I was thinking of painting the door Parma Gray, like the back door,
but I did a search on FnB for door colors and I like both of these, which are not dissimilar to my house.

This looks like you inspo garage but with the bay doors on a differnt side.
