How can you give a modern look to a kitchen with stained cabinets?
Comments (35)I'll leave it to others to offer you aesthetic advice but I hope you don't mind my 2 cents' worth regarding your proposed kitchen lay-out. You have a large space to work with - how wonderful! - but I don't think you're making the best use of the space. Is your island positioned as far from the perimeter as the overhead plan view shows? That aisle looks to be nearly 7 ft. That's a ridiculously wide aisle between your cook top and island and prep sink. Move the island closer to give you a 48" between island counter and perimeter counter. That will also make it easier to arrange table and chairs in your breakfast area. How do you plan to arrange a table and chairs in the breakfast area? The door into the space could cause issues. The space looks to be 10 ft wide. If your table is 42" wide, that gives you 39" aisles at the top and bottom. If you plan to position the table towards the left end of the breakfast area, the door's swing will come close to the table (most exterior doors are 36" wide). Whoever is sitting near the door will need to get up and move out of the way. Do you have pantry cabs as shown in the overhead plan? I don't see any in your elevation drawings. If not, that means your fridge is all the way to the right with the oven/MW column to its left. What counter do you intend to use as a fridge landing area? Where do you intend to set grocery bags to unload into the fridge? I strongly recommend that you place the island's prep sink at the end closest to the clean-up sink so that you can use the island counter closest to the fridge as additional fridge landing space. It's still going to be farther than NKBA's recommended 48" minimum distance but at least you won't have a sink in the way. Do you have plans for the wall area opposite of the fridge and oven/MW column? The overhead drawing doesn't show any cabinets here. Seems like a lost opportunity and a great place for pantry cabs, a drop zone and/or a breakfast station/beverage/snack area....See MoreHow to make the kitchen look modern with little money?
Comments (51)Besides removing the bulkhead and valance, and painting the window frame, there are two items to focus on, the stove elevation and the island. Consider the following: At the stove area, remove the four overhead cabinets. Add open shelves where the far right and far left cabinets are and have a stainless steel backsplash cover the entire wall to the height of the sink window. See pic below. Consider not painting the cabinets dark, which will again date and confuse the space. Paint all the cabinets a light grey (as suggested above) or off white, no antiquing. The satin nickel bar pulls can stay, or you might want to consider brushed gold at a later date, an easy change. Add cabinets at the top of all the cabinets on the oven wall to the continue the horizontal line of the top of the sink window > stainless steel backsplash wall at the stove top > cabinets over the oven wall. On the other side of the kitchen, pop out those panels on the overhead cabinets only, and install clear glass and lighting. Replace the interior solid shelves in those over head cabinets with glass shelves. This to be done on this side of the kitchen only. For the island, consider a vibrant color or navy blue. Add a 15" deep wood counter ledge at the back end, mounted under the stone top and add 2 to 4 stools. Remove the hanging light over the sink, and install some overhead ceiling lights. Add great pendant lights over the island only. Grey and tan always look fresh and smart. With the tan floors and stone tops that color combo will work nicely. Focus on the stove area and the island and let everything else fall back. ^ ^ ^ Stove wall only. Backsplash on this wall can be stainless steel, dark tile or small "chicklet" glass tile. ^ ^ ^ Pale gray cabinets - dark island - interesting island pendant ^ ^ ^ Off white cabinets - medium gray island^ ^ ^ Navy blue island ^ ^ ^ Note great idea for ledge at island: Simple wood parsons table slid over island. ^ ^ ^ Note wood ledge detail ^ ^ ^ Consider bright color island and off white cabinets^ ^ ^ On opposite wall consider glass doors on upper cabinets at this wall only with interior lights, glass interior shelves and undercounter lighting. Paint lower cabinets same as all other painted cabinets (pale gray or off white). The reason to consider off white, instead of bright white, is to soften the transition to the existing floor and counters. Focus on the stove wall and island....See MoreNice kitchen, but help make it more modern/less warm!
Comments (20)ok,,so,,I'm on a mac,,,go to preview,,click to enlarge pic,,,the click and copy on whatever you want to superimpose. hard to describe, easy to do! there are much better people who photoshop. I have slate tile in my kitchen and really like it. you want a gauged, black slate, or Montauk slate. (I think Lowes carries some slate tile). this has to be sealed prior to grouting (i use an enhancing, penetrating sealer. only seal the tops, not the sides or grout won't adhere). If you want that pattern, just search around for it. it's easy to find. the lancaster tile is from tilebar,,,they have other ivory tiles,,,will send you 5 samples for $5. also check online at Lowes/HD,,,sometimes they have decent off-white tiles. can't find that exact light again! home depot has this one (you want something with at least 150-200 watts of light) https://www.1800lighting Quoizel. If you really want a bargain,,go here http://www.lampsplusopenbox.com/close+to+ceiling+lights-category/search.htm check weekly, as it changes. I've ordered a few lights from here. this one is 200W and is 160 bucks. you just have to shop around. as for the pendants,, you can find some on here for $50 http://www.lampsplusopenbox.com/chandeliers-category/mini+pendant-type/search.htm...See Morehelp make old kitchen look modern on a budget
Comments (21)If you look through some European websites you'll see quite a lot of neutral non-wood cabinets, so yours are not really off-trend. And the addition of neutral-toned wood is also very popular. One thing that is different is that these neutral bases are often spiced up with some really bright colors, often bright green which is a nice appetizing color for a kitchen. Imagine yours with wall art that's very bright green and eye-catching - maybe edible plants. Add a bright green rug and maybe even the same bright color on a wall. That will give it an updated look at little cost. Light fixture could be modern or retro - please no overhead lights. Can you add undercabinet lighting now that could be used in your new kitchen later?...See MoreRelated Professionals
