Bedroom Lighting Design Dilemma

Master bedroom chandelier quidance

My bedroom is 17’x13’ with 10’ ceiling and I intend to hang a chandelier above the foot of my queen size bed. Is 17” wide x 24” tall chandelier too small for this space and location? Is 22”-24” too wide especially if i consider the height of the fixture above the foot of my bed? My room style direction is traditional Italian. Truly appreciate any expert guidance. Thank you!

This is hard to answer since we need to see the fixture the meausrement is only one part of the decision . Do you have 2 in mind then post the pics here and IMO aslo a pic of your bedroom as it will be decorated. Post all here in comments then we have a good idea of the space and the lightis .DO NOT start another post

Just finished painting … room is total work in progress at the moment. I contemplated changing my bed but I have chosen to be content with what I have and create something beautiful with it, best I can. I have just completed 14 years of rescuing, rehabilitating severely neglected and abused dogs and I am doing this for me. Floors will be completely redone when my last rescue departs this earth, she is not ready and redoing floors needs to wait as its to disruptive. Hope these images help. A couple lights I have sourced are included. Thank you!

For stronger light with a small aperture fixture in an AIC housing your best choice is low voltage halogen fixtures since that's what they were designed to do. Otherwise you can try one of the 3" Lightolier line-voltage LytePoints (basic adj. 385WHX baffle or adj. pinhole 308WWX so you can light the walls instead of the floor) in a 302 ESAICX housing with a 50 w. GU10/ES16 lamp. These aren't really much cheaper than a low voltage fixture and they put out less light. Alternatively, in order to save a few dollars, try a 3 3/4" Lightolier line voltage LyteCaster non-adjustable step-baffle downlight (2005WH) in a 2000 AIC housing with a 50 w. PAR20 lamp. These are good if you own really nice oriental rugs but they don't do much for the walls. You should be very careful when locating recessed lighting in a bedroom since that is the one place where you are most likely to be looking up into the fixtures. I don't know where a 6" recessed light would be appropriate in a residence but it's definitely not anywhere near a bed but I think you already know that. Many recessed fixture brands have to reduce the allowed lamp size in order to meet the heat output limitation of an AIC housing. I have found Lightolier to be the best of the mid-priced fixtures in this regard. Halo is the worst. If you install one of the brands that do this, and then install a larger lamp, the fixture will eventually cycle on and off as it overheats and then cools so it's very important to pay attention to the lamping charts which are often found inside the fixtures as well as in the catalogs and the installation instructions.

Wow! What amazing changes! Your room should be pinned as an awesome example of a Tuscan “before/after” makeover. :) I think your idea of a reading area is perfect. I’d keep it simple and cozy — very plush, comfy chair and ottoman, pretty throw, table with lamp, rug. Or, two chairs with ottomans, or large chaise (I can’t tell dimensions in pic). I have large window seats in both my bedroom and guest bedroom ... they are never used for sitting. They look good, but are just more surfaces for me to dust (I took the cushions off). I keep a few pillows and a couple of plants on them. If I were building, I’d rather have the space they take up for furniture or whatever. And since you have a view to the pool, I wouldn’t want anything blocking the area right in front of the windows. I’d want it open. You and your husband are clearly talented and have great taste, you shouldn’t feel nervous at all. Take your time, do lots of researching for ideas and inspiration, and enjoy. :) This is the only way I’d do window seating. 😉

@Patricia Colwell King size bed, nightstands and maybe something under the stairwell. The room has tall ceilings but is otherwise small for a master. It will be hard to fit the bed and nightstands while allowing room to GET to the bed due to the staircase. The chandelier reminds me of some sort of gothic lighting that would be in draculas house. That is definitely not the style I'm going for LOL. I tend me to like mid-century moden with a side of glam.

I recently purchased this bedside table, just 1, which arrives tomorrow. Thinking a 24” round on the other side or taking my Grandpa’s antique desk, having it beautifully refinished and placed on the wall next to my bed and window as writing desk and bedside table. Both bedside table surfaces are 30” tall and the top of my mattress is 31”. You mentioned traditional Italian, but I find your choices may be a bit too formal for your bedroom. Maybe consider slightly contemporary yet traditional and think about the amount of light it will provide, if that’s important to you.

Thank you, Maureen. I am glad you bring this forward as I was talking with a friend yesterday and the image you share, the fixture 2nd/top on the left side is one I was looking at, but in either a rubbed oil bronze or black (since my bed has wrought iron inlay in headboard and footboard). I really like the look, elegance and softness of this light.
