Electrical Wiring Design Dilemma Flooring

Vinyl flooring over concrete

Hi,

We are installing vinyl planks in the basement that has load bearing pillars is some places. The pillars are screwed in to the concrete. So the spot around the pillars are little raised. So we are not able to secure the planks properly around the pillar.

Attached is the picture .

What options do we have now ?

Those are not structural most likely. They surround an adjustable or concrete filled steel post. If there are a bunch of them the flooring should have had an underlayment put down (IF the manufacturer allows on) to basically pack the floor up the correct level. Was the floor flattened to within the manufactures tolerances (usually 1/8 over 10')? Looks like you are going over tile. What was used r how was the slab set up with waterproofing or a vapor barrier? If there is any moisture present (and there almost always is in concrete) you will have a mess in short order.

We used dri core in our basemtn for old school vinyl plank it might work with yours too . It sure needed to be dealt with before you started install I have actaully never seen something like that .

Vinyl plank is becoming very popular and the quality can range wildly. Main thing that will need to be asked is how is the concrete? Level? Any pits? LVT is a bit more sensitive to that. Laminate is also light years ahead of where it was 10 years ago. They're textured and look more like real wood now. Beveled edges also look nicer in my opinion. Most of it is loose lay now and with modern underlay the echo and moisture issues are gone for the most part. I would not use carpet with cats. You could always use a rug if you wanted the comfort in certain areas. My laminate runs about $3-4 sq/ft and the vinyl plank about the same for the better stuff. There is cheaper out there but if you look at the top layer it's paper thin. Those are my suggestions as the owner of a flooring store.

I just went through the exact same issue. I pulled up my sheet vinyl and there was this white stuff they'd spread under it. It wasn't sticky or bumpy, but my husband said it was the adhesive. The Novalis box and website says the floor must be free of anything so I took it up. I used hot water, a scraper and a scrub brush and got most of it up. The operative word is most, I was only doing my 30 sq foot entryway and it took days. You can rent a machine for larger spaces. I'd seen some posts online that said not to use adhesive remover because it may soak into the concrete and cause problems with the new floor sticking. I used the Henry's, which by the way is very thin, goes on white and dries clear within an hour. It has been one week and my planks are sticking just fine and the floor looks great. I think it makes sense to do the most and best prep work you can.

With hydronic radiant systems, in order for them to be more efficient, you want the return water to still have a little heat, but not too much. I wonder if your carpet is keeping the heat from dissipating while it traverses the loop, resulting in hotter return water. Sounds like LVP is out, because you can't heat a home if your boiler is set at 85, but you might want to bump it down some anyway to account for the lesser amount of heat the loop(s) seem to be losing before returning to the boiler. Old oil boilers were at around 180F, but newer more efficient gas ones are more adjustable and ours is set at 140F most of the time, in a pretty mild climate. We do bump up the temperature to as high as 180 when it's 20F or below outside. The efficiency depends on the temp of the return water, so you could save some money by bumping it down. Good luck.

We did put underlayment. That’s the white checked surface that you see in the picture. It is not on a tile surface. Even with the underlayment, it does not seem to be even in this spot. We are done with the flooring half way. So now not sure how to handle this space.

I would open up at least this one column to see what you have.

at the very least use a floor leveler to prep the surface before you go any further.

Time is passed then to figure out leaving that and the flooring will definitely break off the interlocks if not flat. Remove the column cover and see what you have but whichever type post it is "should" be buried in the concrete and you will have a flat surface. Guaranteed that column is a cover, the tell is the galv "L" brackets holding it down.

Hmmm for a basement I would just box the bottom area where the l brackets stick up and call it a day maybe consider boxing the whole pillar to get away from the fluted column as it's dated

I would remove the current cover and then design a square cover. (Look for ideas on Pinterest.)

Include some type of base trim around the bottom, and maybe add add'l trim to "build up", so that it will extend out until your floor is back to level. (Hope this makes sense.)

It's also possible to "block out" a larger column before you cover it.

Brainstorm whether it should match the floor color or other features of the area.

I would plan to attach the bottom trims with Loctite (etc.) and NOT through the flooring.
