What Rooms Would You Put Recessed Lighting In?
Comments (44)utilitarian areas only-kitchen, hallways, mater bath (kitchen also has undercabinet lighting which I love) I do like the option to turn on/off the main light so I installed central fixtures(either chandeliers or semi flush or flush mounts depending on the ceiling's height, area, etc) in every room that needed it in my opinion, plus pendants, plus sconces..plus lamps and floor lights..plus we installed dimmers everywhere and so happy we did that, that really makes all the difference. we do have several skylights as well I really truly don't care what everybody's doing, and what's considered updated, dated, or outdated, as long as I can't find it being either very useful or beautiful main light-useful. that's how I grew up, and it's nice when you have kids and elderly living with you. when I can get it not to look like a hole, I'll get it not to look like a hole I saw many homes when I think they totally exaggerated with these allover. As long as it's put judiciously though-then yes why not. I'm just not a fan of having too many. But I also have a flip phone, no internet, with absolutely zero desire to exchange it for something else, so.....See MoreCan you recess a refrigerator into an exterior wall?
Comments (4)kiwi-can you pull your cabinets forward? That requires a larger countertop and then also deeper uppers if you have any there. That is what we did. Pulled base forward 6" and made uppers 6" deeper. It looks more flush and not such a behemoth. I am glad we did it but yes it does cost more to have modified uppers and a bit more for a larger counter but it was the short side of the "L" so not terrible....See MoreHow far from wall to put recessed lighting?
Comments (11)Actually just installed 5 cans in the kitchen yesterday. On the ~13 ft section of cabinets against the wall, 3 cans about 4 ft apart and 29 inches (to center of fixture) from the back wall (26 inch counters). We've under cabinet fluorescent lighting so plenty of task area light. Two other cans pretty much centered over a sink/ snack island backing to great room. All this replaced a huge fluorescent construct in the center of the kitchen. If I were to tweak anything, I might install the cans a few inches further from the wall to improve the amount of light going into the below counter cabinets when opened. Plenty pleased with the install as is, a major change in atmosphere of the kitchen without the darn piece of furniture previously attached to the ceiling. I think a key issue for placement depends on if you have under cab lighting. If you don't, I would not install closer than the counter edge. If you do have under cab lights, further out or closer in, a matter of whether you are looking for general light or highlighting your cab faces....See MoreHow far from cabinets did you put recessed lighting?
Comments (5)My uppers are 12" deep and the recessed lights are about 3" from the cabinets so they shine directly over the countertops. The kitchen is not very wide and we have a ceiling fan in the center of it. We didn't want to put the lights too close to the fan because of the possibility of strobing. There is going to be about 6" of crown molding so the cabinet doors will clear the rim of the recessed lights. We also put in undercabinet lights because you can never have enough light in a kitchen! We were some limitations in where the recessed cans could go because we didn't want to move the air conditioning ducts that are above the kitchen....See MoreRelated Professionals
