Kool Ray liquid shade vs. shade cloth
Comments (9)Let me bump this old thread to say that I tried to make some diy shade paint by using a diluted interior latex paint, mixed at about 5:1. I applied it with a pump sprayer six months ago to my double layer of 6-mil poly. The problem is that now the paint doesn't want to come off. I had thought that a pressure washer would easily take it off, at the risk of being too strong. But I was completely wrong. Not only does the power washer not remove any paint, the poly itself is oblivious to it. I use the same machine to strip wooden decks and siding. I even tried to cut through the poly with it, and it doesn't even make a mark. It seems like it relates to the poly not being a firm surface; the movement takes away the leverage of the pressured water spray. Undiluted Simple Green and a *lot* of work with a typical plastic kitchen scrub brush eventually took off the paint. If the brush has scratched the poly, I can't see it. It took me four hours of scrubbing to clean just one end wall of a 14' wide high tunnel. If I ever try shade paint again, I will spend the money for the Kool Ray AND paint a small test area only, let it sit for a year, and see how easy it is to remove....See MoreWedding bouquet roses?
Comments (31)It is a lovely idea, to have home grown roses used in your daughter's wedding. Not to be discouraging, but I would hesitate to grow my own, just in case. You are at the mercy of weather, insects, disease, etc and it is hard to predict if you will have enough of them. You will need more bushes than you think, and growing them in pots, they may not be as vigorous as they would in the ground. If I were you, I would grow one type that you love, and purchase the rest. I am planning on doing the flower arrangements for my son's reception, its a small wedding so I think its manageable. Even so, I plan to buy roses in bulk online. I've had too many roses fall victim to aphids, japanese beetles, drought, too much rain, cane borers, black spot, and of course the many deer who find my rosebuds to be a culinary delight....See MoreShade cloth for greenhouse
Comments (5)I love your pictures! Here is a little chuckle for you. My two test plants hanging in the maple tree. I had to brighten up the picture so you could see them since it is dusk here. You wouldn't even know they were there if I didn't point them out. I had to warn my husband not to bump his head on them when he is mowing. LOL! Your pecan tree gave me the inspiration to try it. I always feel sad for my plants that are kept indoors all year and don't get the natural light. The Chelsea went crazy in my classroom this year. She doubled in size. It must be the north window and sweaty little bodies!...See MoreShade cloth, what %?
Comments (11)Interesting on the "open ends" comment. One of the problem I had last year when I put out seedlings under a large maple, was birds came up, i suspect crows, and nipped off tips and uprooted several. So I was planning on making this fully enclosed in shade cloth. Am going to guess the temp difference between western Wa and Los Gatos Ca, that that's a bigger issue for you than I, but will keep an eye on that. Where do you buy your shade cloth? Google turns up many options, but always good to have a rec from someone. Thanks....See MoreRelated Professionals
