My grandma eats sweets including homemade pies with 1-2 c sugar per pie, loves sweets in general, eats too many fried foods for my taste, doesn’t eat paint chips, bathes in a porcelain tub, and was JUST moved to a nursing facility this year since she’s losing her mobility (mind is still intact) and in another month she will be celebrating her 100th birthday. You don’t have to live in a bubble to live a long life. Much of your life expectancy is predetermined in large part by genetics. Use common sense and don’t lick the bathtub.

I know I probably went overboard, but I have been searching Houzz for shower/tub combos for myself if I decide to go in that direction. Most of these pictures have Master Bath titles - they tend to be small houses or apartments in large cities where space is an issue. They all have a generous sized tub. A few have extra shower bling and even a separate tub filler. All of them have material choices and the level of tile work that you see in a master bathroom. I'm sure that if I searched Houzz I could find just as many, or even more, remodels of small master baths where they have just built a walk in shower. I think the decision to do a shower/tub may be a personal choice because they want a soaking tub - since they are titled Master I'm assuming the bath is not the only bath in the house and they could easily just go with a shower. Now this is more like it: It's freestanding (though I don't care for this particular surround) and the backrest is what I find the ideal shape for two people side by side, with good back and shoulder support for both. Most tubs with this shape are like 5 feet wide which is not what I want; this one is just wide enough for two. The taper at the other end helps preserve water without getting too crowded, but is still wide and sloped enough to lean against when you want to face opposite directions. Still, it's the side by side configuration I like best. Two-person tubs where you face each other look great in pictures and in the showroom. Then you use one in real life only to find you have to SCREAM AT EACH OTHER to be heard over the roar of the jets. Although air jets may be a bit quieter than the water jets I've used. I could do without the huge ledge at the end of this tub though - what's that all about? I too can't find a tub that gets everything right.

My parents looked into a similar issue when they needed to create an accessible shower for an elderly relative last year, and were debating whether to take the bathtub out of a hall bath (the only place *other* than the master that had a tub, in their case). My mom asked locally to see what the impact on resale might be. General response was that it was a very bad idea to take the tub out of a common/hall bath that might serve children's rooms because that would be a dealbreaker for many young families, but tub versus shower in en suite/master bathrooms didn't make much difference, since there are people who prefer one and people who prefer the other. They added it to a half bath instead, and I think designed the space so that it could fit a tub without a major remodel in the future if needed. Personally, I wouldn't care as long as the house still had a bathtub somewhere. But then, you may want to take my opinion with a grain of salt, since I live in an area where master bathrooms are pretty rare---I can only think of two families we know who have master bathrooms at all! :) (I think both just have showers.) Which is just to say that it really depends on your local market and what the "norm" is.
