Oh, I miss Elizabeth! She would remind you that ALL BEGONIAS have fibrous roots. Tuberous begonias have to have roots coming from their tubers or they would just be lumps of plant matter that would turn into compost. All begonias can be grown from seed. I think when you speak of 'fibrous begonias', and I first learned that as a name for them and it is quite common in the trade so I hope I don't come across as too nasty for words, are what I also learned originally to call 'bloomin' fools'. The proper name is B. semperflorens, which is basically a fancy way to say the same thing--it means 'always blooming'. The only begonias you can't grow from seed are the hybrids which would not come true from seed but might give you something you like better. The semperflorens grow just fine from cuttings--I've done it many times. Don't think the tuberous are as easy from cuttings but since I can't grow them here I don't know. But you leave out all the wonderful cane-types, and the shrubs, and the rhizomatous, and the Rexes, and the trailing/scandant, and the thick-stemmed. Check the American Begonia Society site, and the Astro Branch site which you can access from it, for pictures of many, many begonias you may never have dreamed of. One of my favorite kinds are the ones which, when I show visitors, they say 'That's a Begonia!?'

Thanks Nancy! :) I have been all over those seeds already!;) I am really hoping the Jewels will make a good houseplant, I am not ready to let go of it yet! I also want to see what it does as it ages,more flowers,less flowers,ect... I am saving the seed to do a huge mass planting of them next year,I just adore everything about this plant, and have seen pics where it is amazing in a mass planting. As for the Four O'Clocks,I am only digging up certain ones,I got some really neat ones from trade seeds,a couple of them have about 4 different color combos going on all on one plant! I have 2 of them that are about as true red as I have come across in Four O'Clocks,so I am keeping those also. I used to have a great collection of Four O'Clocks,there were many colors,every year there was more and more fuchsia and pink (mostly fuchsia),until finally there were no other colors. So when I heard they produce a tuber and could be stored I was thrilled! I love all of them but like to see more than two colors in a planting of them!;) DH grabbed some paper bags for me from the grocery store,I may just pick up a bail of peat to be on the safe side,I do have another question about the peat,should it be moist when I store the tubers? Or should I keep it dry? I know some of these questions of mine sound silly,but the one and only time I stored daylily bulbs outside a pot of dirt (I didnt get them in the ground in a enough time) they shriveled up on me,I dont know what went wrong!:( Thanks again for all this info you guys are sharing,I hope some more people chime in,if you do things differently than any method mentioned or if you totally agree with a method mentioned,please post, your input really would help! :)

Our member PlantLady2008, with her hubby, own's Wynne's Dahlias. I haven't bought from her myself, but others here have and I have already placed an order myself for next year. All of my Dahlias come from Swan Island Dahlias. They've been great to me and their tubers have been great too. I had one that didn't sprout this year and they quickly promised to give me 2 extra (plus the one that didn't sprout) on my next year's order (I didn't want them to send me them back in the spring this year.) Lots of choices, and they've all grown pretty much to their specifications (except that Raspberry Punch is listed as a Stellar but is, in fact, a FD...;-]) I know others here by elsewhere, so hopefully you'll get a number of well recommended choices. socks, you can keep a library (Overdrive) sourced Kindle book and keep reading it on a Kindle reader for months and months IF (and only if) you turn off your data signal (whether Wifi or through a cell carrier). It's through that sign on that the Amazon site is contacted and the deadlines for library downloads are enforced and overdue ones get deleted. How you make that work is by downloading several books at a time, read them all with the data signal off, then connect and download several more. Repeat as desired. chisue, while there are Overdrive apps for different tablets and PCs, you can only check out library books from libraries where you have an account. But different libraries have different/nonidentical Overdrive subscriptions so you're likely to find books on the Hawaii Library Overdrive site that may not be available from your home library and vice versa. You can download Overdrive material from anywhere. Several of my kids have spent time living abroad and they were able to continue to download Overdrive-sourced Kindle and audio books using their US library accounts.
