While I am not an expert nor an antique deal several things immediately scream "no" to me. The shipping is cheap; no dealer worth her salt will ship a genuine vintage vase or antique using free USPS ground, a near guarantee of breakage for a vase. Second, the condition shows "used"; while I realize that is an eBay designation meaning "may be a floor model or store return that has been used. I'd be very suspicious of the 1850-1890 date range. A century plus later, maybe.

If you like it go for it. But it's probably mass manufactured in either the late twenitieth ceutury or the early twenty-first century. Did you search Google Images?

At $4, if you like it, it's worth it. A lot of fine china that used to be worth a fair amount is hard to sell these days. I assume if anyone could get $50 for that, they would have.

I say it wasn't the horse hair you were allergic to but rather the dust and other crud in the pad. Without pictures of the sofa it's hard to tell if it's really a veryf ine old sofa or a repro. But I think it's very likely that it's a good old piece. It's probably horse hide or cow hide and probably has been rubbed for years with saddle soap....which darkens the leather but also is said to preserve it. all stuffing compresses over time....even horse hair. If that doesn't bother you...it's fine, If it bothers you someone might be able to loosen the leather and put more stuffing in it....but then it wouldn't look like a great old sofa, would it? As for the feet....that was the way a sofa like that would be made....much easier than trying to wrap the leather around the legs. I say, if you love it....go for it!!! You'll never find another! eBay's buyer protection plan is seriously flawed. the most you can be refunded is $175.00! The only way to be completely protected is to buy with your credit card. Either using PayPal or a seller's merchant account. PayPal's Buyer Protection Policy only covers SOME auctions. The logo must be there for the $1000 coverage to be possible. Otherwise you are not covered if the seller empties their PayPal account. USE YOUR CREDIT CARD on eBay! Someone earlier mentioned to only buy from sellers who are 97% or higher. This is a mistake. In school, 97% is great. On eBay it is generally dismal. For expensive handbags you want 99.6% or higher. Most designer purses on eBay are fakes. If they are listed as authentic, this is a problem. If listed as designer inspired it is not. They must be reported for them to be pulled. eBay cannot police thousands of auctions. The VeRO rights holders do report some and so do concerned eBayers but there are still hundreds running at any time. the eBay Discussion Board for shoes and accessories is a great place to learn how to buy designer handbags on eBay safely. Unfortunately, or fortunately, depending upon whether you are selling or buying, furniture goes through a long period of time where it is nothing but "used furniture". It used to be about as long as until it became antique, but the time frame is getting shorter. Some pretty ordinary 30-40 year old furniture is going up in price, because Disco-deco is being used by designers. I think eBay has also raised prices rather than lowered, because of increased exposure. The real exception to this is bench made or studio furniture, although even that is subject to market whim. A lot of the owners of George Nakashima furniture are dying or moving to nursing facilities so the market is getting saturated. You got a great deal. The equivalent of $300 when the set was new would not have bought a single chair probably.

It is probably so cheap because it is missing its lid. You can see in the other pictures that it has a ridge where the lid sits. All chocolate pots would have lids.The

It's an auction, so $4.25 may not be the final price. The bottom does show some age, but with the lid missing I wouldn't expect it to bring a high price.
