bamboo floor fumes--anyone else have this problem??
Comments (69)I'm adding to this thread because it seems like many folks who are posting comments here don't have a thorough background in the toxicity of a wide variety of home remodeling materials. Unless you buy your flooring (wood, bamboo, cork, etc.) from a well-known, long-running green housing material distributor, it is likely that your flooring is filled with toxic glues, sealers, and other chemicals that produce VOCs (volatile organic compounds). Bamboo in particular has a lot of glue because bamboo stalks are so thin (look at a bamboo cutting board to fully appreciate how much glue is needed). I have a MPH degree (Master of Public Health) and one of my areas of expertise is environmental health. I'm currently renovating a new condo apartment and for every material, I had to buy it from a specialty distributor that carefully vetted their product portfolio. The benefit of buying from green supply companies -- living in a healthy home. The challenge of purchasing green, healthy building materials -- cost. Green materials are more expensive. But, if you add up all the costs related to adverse health reactions and getting medical treatment to address them...then cheaper, less healthy building materials aren't so cheap, are they? A good place to start is Green Building Supply (based in Illinois, they have a great website), which ships all over the U.S. I bought cork flooring from them, they're great. Can't recommend them enough. They carry a wide array of building materials including safe paints, safe caulks and sealers, safe flooring, etc. If you want to get advice before a purchase, check out the website, 'My Chemical Free House.' Corinne is a building biologist and her site is filled with awesome tips for choosing safe and healthy building materials. Comments (21)I know the feeling, Shades- I'm enjoying an adult beverage right now. One of the first things I planted at our new place was 2 daffodils. That's right- two. The little church I visit up there had a sermon which related to daffodil bulbs, so each person got one in a little kit with fertilizer and instructions. I wasn't going to take one, but the cutest little boy ran up and was SO excited to give me one! Then folks I insisted I take two; one for me and one for my wife. In the spirit (pun intended) of the thing I felt obligated to plant them. We visited in February, and they were up and had buds. Alas, we weren't there for the actual flowers, but I was still excited. Two down; about 500 to go. I want to naturalize them all over the place....See MoreWhy does anyone put gravel on top of their potted plants?
Comments (36)Hey,Mike, Glad they arrived in good shape, no cold damages. Yes, for tropicals I would water once they potted up but for succulents I would wait a couple days to water them unless you keep them in a very warm temperature. The aloe 'Christmas carol' will color up for you nicely if given more light. The Haworthia cymniformnis is/was a variegated one. But the variegation is lost since I bought it. not sure what happened probably something to do with my grow condition? See if you have better luck to have the variegation back:) From the plants you probably can tell my indoor light condition is not idea for them.lol. I am sure they will thrive under your care. On the topic of top dressing. I don't top dressing with pebbles. Did it once but they get in the way when I repotting the plants. Although I use rocks (got from beach) to hold newly repotted plants. by the way, love your pot, Nancy. Good it didn't break. Did your kitty get a time out? :)...See MoreDoes anyone else see this with their Aglaonemas?
Comments (22)Neither of these two dieffs are getting any direct sunlight at all. They’re on top of a shelf (right next to each other) in a corner about 2-3 ft away from the skylight, but they are right under a 3 bulb light (I put 2- 6500k and 1- 3500k bulbs in for the plants) and it is the brightest room in the house right now. I’m thinking you both might be right about maybe moving it to a shadier spot. I was actually thinking about that yesterday, because I have another small dieff that’s in a 3” terra cotta and it’s on a low shelf of a plant stand in my bedroom and it gets so little light there, I supplement those plants with a grow light. I was having the same issues with that one yellowing and losing leaves too, but since I moved it to that super shady spot a few months ago, it seems to be doing really well. That one hasn’t had a yellow leaf in a few months, but the pot is TC, not ceramic, and it’s half the size of the other two, so I do water it more often. Laurie- I read that article too, along with everything I could google a million times over and over and they constantly confuse me. I am going to try your watering technique and wait to water until a few days after soil is dry 1.5“ down, like you said. I’ll move then both today to a shadier area in the house and then try Laurie’s watering suggestions and see how they do. Karen- how lucky and wonderful that you had someone to mentor you and advise you with your plants. I wish I had that and could have a person to come show me and teach me in person, but it’s great to be able to a site a like this as a resource to meet people like you. I never had plants before, then 2 yrs ago someone gave me an amaryllis bulb for Christmas, and that was it. Now I have hundreds of plants, I honestly went a little crazy, and I have read everything I can get my hands on, but nothing is better than one on one teaching. Having someone there to answer all of your questions (which I have a lot) must have been incredible. Thank you both for your great advice and wonderful help. I really appreciate your input and time....See MoreRelated Professionals
