Hardie Trim Tabs

Currently having a home built. Using Hardie pre-finished siding. Because of this, we wanted to use the Hardie trim tabs to avoid face nails with a little paint dabbed on them. The quote came back at an addition of $5250 to use the tabs. House is a 3300 sq ft ranch.

To the pros, is this in the ballpark? Feels high but I’m not in the business.

Is that 3300 sq ft of Hardie siding or is the house 3300 sq ft? What is it worth to you to not have the filler and dabs of paint? What is the cost of the siding? Labor is most likely a little more intensive for the tabs as well.

You are in the business of paying for the building of a home. For some reason you want Hardie trim tabs. You can accept that price or reject that price or get another another price elsewhere. Does your budget support the price you have been given? A good budget will help in making rational decisions.

The thing that bothers me about modern construction is that the trim around windows and doors looks thin. My home has Hardi Plank siding, and the trim is 1x4 wood. My trim boards are placed on top of the siding, whereas modern window and door trim is put on first and the siding is butted up against it. It looks like THIS. It's not that the modern method is wrong, but the trim is supposed to be extra thick so it stands out from the siding. So, to answer your question... YES the thicker Artisan trim will make your home look better.

Cement board and other manufactured products come in different dimensions based on where they are commonly used. In most cases you can find the dimensions you want, but sometimes it might not be sold in that size by all manufacturers. Also, since manufacturered products are often made to be consistent strength throughout, trimming them down does not affect their durability. We used Hardi board for siding, but Boral products (compressed fly ash) for all the trim. My primary concerns were dimensional stability and not having any rot in the future. I do not know if its resistant to woodpeckers. However I'm sure there are several other competing products. Bruce

Thank you for the quick reply. So if the base trim is Hardie as well, it shouldn't be in direct contact with the brick floor and I'd have to have a gap of some small size under the whole wrap assembly? I'm concerned about water from the sprinkler system as well.

Millworkman - the house floor plan is 3300sq ft. Materials are already paid for as is labor for a general install. This is the incremental cost to use the tabs. Relatively small cost for the tabs and then all labor.

Mark- my budget is large, but just as I wouldn’t want pay $200K for an f-150 even though it’s in my budget, I also wouldn’t want to overpay here.

Without knowing the extent of exterior trim required and your climate zone (stainless steel fasteners are required in coastal zones,) it's anybody's guess. I think you'll be better served to ask your builder how he/she arrived at the additional cost.

Still no idea on the sq ftg of actual siding. If purchased you should know the quantity, But I am betting that the 5K works out to a buck or two a sq ft. That is the way to judge. If the siding is worth 100k installed (just a wild as guess as there is zero way to know for sure), the 5k for the tabs is an overall drop in the bucket for the look you want. Look at the big picture, not just the 5k. All of which is why I was asking for context.
