Sshould I paint or stain my beautiful pine doors?

I recently had raw pine doors installed, our house is very rustic. Should I stain the doors to match the trim or paint both?

A clear coat of stain? I'm not sure what that means. If you want to put a color to your wood that isn't a paint, then you need to stain it. Minwax is good for this, comes in many colors. After the wood is stained and this has dried, you can seal it and finish it. This is usually done with a polyurethane, two coats at least with sanding in between coats. The first coat of poly will raise the grain of the wood and make it rough. After sanding, the wood should remain pretty smooth. As for filling the holes, you can buy putty for this that is premixed. Minwax makes some and also the Color Putty Corporation. If you are not happy with the match that comes in the premixed cans, you can mix two colors together to get a better match. As for the weather, just be sure to stop working around 3 or 4 so that things have some time to dry before the colder temps arrive. Sticking a fan in the area to keep the air moving around always helps with drying.

Pricing wise, the wooden interior doors are more than double. The front door on the house also costs a good chunk more to get a stainable fiberglass material. If I have wood interior doors, I would want at least the inside portion of the front door to be wood, too. However, it is more of an oak and limited to gel stain kits, while my trim will definitely be pine. I feel like I may have too much wood in the house after wooden birch cabinets, stained pine base, stained pine window jambs, stained pine window casing, and stained pine door casing. Wooden doors would flow with the wood trim, but they would be big chunks of stained wood. Looking around online I see a lot of painted trim and stained wooden doors but NOT near as much stained trim and painted doors. However, I have wondered if I had doors painted a darker color, then maybe the wood stained trim would not look so broken up from the doors. Hoping to get a second opinion on this idea and if anyone has some photos of what I am talking about that'd be good to look over.

Now I am all set with the INSIDE Pine Shiplap- I need asking any ideas what to do with our Outdoor Pine shiplap ( under the roof- we will install tile floor-we are thinking we might close the patio as 4 season patio in the future). It has been rough and long renovation-I am tired getting hit left/right-so hoping will get ideas from this discussion. The option: Stain in -could not afford using weatherstain -wicked too expensive - thinking to use Benjamin Moore Arborcoat -just not sure what color. OR paint is with Exterior Aura. Question: What is the proper preparation either for stain or paint? Do I need to sand 1st? Sand, Prime if we decide to paint? Protection: what to use for stain or paint because of the New England weather.

Thank you RES 3D. And everyone. I appreciate all of the feedback....even the things no one wants to hear. The spots are actually from sap. After the first board appeared spotted, I inspected them closer as I was moving along. I plan to bring everything I’ve learned straight to the paint store. Good thing is...I have a handy trim carpenter at my disposal. If it turns out to be a total bust, it’s still worth the tens of thousands we saved not having a builder and putting in a little elbow grease PS- I have a whole new respect for builders...and the construction market in general! We’ve encountered FABULOUS tradesmen along the way. This porch ceiling looks amazing so for now I plan to completely enjoy it before it’s possible demise!

I would stain them. Remember they are pine, so you need to use a conditioner on them, before you stain, so they dont get blotchy. The doors are beautiful , and if stained correctly, will look fantastic.

Stain - wood is too beautiful, and also the space will look more visually cohesive and less busy if same color as trim. IMHO skinny trim like that does not really benefit from being emphasized.

It’s going to be hard to stain to match the trim (is trim stained or painted?). The trim doesn’t work too well with the floor color, or maybe it’s just the lighting. If the trim is painted are you willing able to replace the trim and stain all at the same time?

I would paint the trim to match the walls and clear coat the doors if you like the rustic feel.

I may choose a green for the trim and leave the doors clear coated.
