How Red - Lady in Red
Comments (4)Ahh, double-checked their website and they've updated a lot of the info. I bought mine way back at the ATL flower show before they were even commercially available and some of the original marketing material was showing what was definitely medium red flowers. But I notice those pics aren't shown anymore. The gallery (with actual unretouched field plants) goes into some detail on soil pH and it seems LNR gen. starts out white but then turns soft blue or light pink depending on soil. The only red you get is in the older flowers. That lines up more with what I've been getting and have seen. That had been bothering me though, since my soil is pretty neutral, and it's mainly new soil. I'd been getting lots of other reds/pinks, but LNR wasn't even leaning that way at all. There's really no big pine trees, just that dwarf japanese pine and other miniature conifers. So looking at their updated website, mine looks pretty much in line with what they have. The flowers are always going to bloom light, and either powder blue or soft pink. The "Red" seems now to just apply more to the veining/stems and the fall color....See MoreLady In Red Climber
Comments (55)Vaporvac, It was going in that corner until we saw Fourth of July. We were both very taken with Fourth of July so decided to put that in the place where we took out the old well established once blooming red rose that may have been Dr. Huey. The reason I give it all the qualifiers is that it was tip hardy and apparently Dr. Huey isn't even supposed to live in our zone so it may have been something else. Here is Forth of July today. It is just so cheerful! So it got the prime spot at the corner of the house and Lady in Red got put into the cutting garden. But I also love Lady in Red's blooms. It was really a struggle to relegate her to the cutting bed. If she is cane hardy I'm considering getting another to replace Robusta on the east side of our house. It is a prime spot with great sun and I see it every day. Robusta didn't have as large of blooms as I had read and is the only rose I ordered sight unseen instead of picking out personally....See MoreRosa Florentina
Comments (37)Diane, I agree that the photos on the forum are just as good, and sometimes better, than the photos on HMF. There are definitely some experienced rosarians here. When I want to see what any given rose looks like, I usually check here, then HMF, in that order. One advantage of the forum, is the gardener's growing zone is usually posted, and rarely posted on HMF. And, you are right about Florentina resembling Ascot. She also reminds me of a smaller version of Rouge Royale....See MoreRed hue question: Florentina vs Knockout
Comments (7)This confirms what I suspected, that the original knockout is a hot pink sort of red. I’m still early in the planning stages for the new landscaping so plenty of time to work this out. What about Lady Emma Hamilton near Tess d’Ubervilles? They would not be right up next each other. I would have a couple of LEH groupings and then Tess on a trellis against the house....See MoreRelated Professionals
